Drchunga --
Getting a worldwide number relies on three different resources --
Dataquest, ETForecasts, and IDC numbers. Dataquest numbers are taken
from published numbers in a business almanac:
1990: 23.7 million
1991: 27.0 million
1992: 32.4 million
1993: 38.9 million
1994: 47.9 million
1995: 60.2 million
1996: 70.9 million
1997: 84.2 million
The numbers for the next two years are from ETForecasts
"Worldwide PC Sales will Surpass 200 million units in 2005" (Feb. 25,
2000)
http://www.etforecasts.com/pr/pr200.htm
1998: 88.8 million
1999: 107.0 million
and finally International Data Corp.'s numbers (including a forecast
for this year) from PC World
"PC Sales Continue to Slide" (Sept. 10, 2001)
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,61283,00.asp
2000: 131.3 million
2001: 129.6 million
2002 (F): 135.5 million
There are some interesting Google Answers relating to market
penetration for PCs, including this one, "Mobile phone, PC and PDA
