You know how in the bottom right hand corner of Windows 98 there is
that speaker icon that you double-click to change the volume? Well,
I managed to delete it.

I got this executable from someone so the volume controls load up
whenever Windows starts, but it’s not the same.

How can I get it to how it was before?

Hello markabe,

I think your problem can be solved by going to the Control Panel, then
Multimedia. In the lower left is a checkbox for "Show Volume Control
on the Taskbar".

Unless you actually went into Windows Explorer or My Computer and
deleted the executable from the Windows or Windows System Directory,
this should restore this function.

Should this not be the solution, let me know what version of Windows
98 you are running by leaving a request for clarification and I will
find the exe for you. But I am confident this should solve your
problem.

clouseau,

OK, I tried your solution, and I tick the checkbox and click Apply,
click OK, and close the Multimedia box, but after I open the box again
the checkbox is unticked. So it seems the checkbox does not want to
remain checked.

It looks like that somehow, perhaps while in a drunken stupor, I
managed to delete the executable.

As for what version of Windows 98 I am running, I don't know which one
- how do I know which one it is?

Hello again,

I'm surprised the executable is actually missing. If you tick the show
on taskbar and click apply, does the icon appear? If not, perhaps you
actually did remove the exe.

I have uploaded the file here:
http://www.lucidmatrix.com/uploads/SNDVOL32.zip

The file only remains on this site for 30 days.

Unzip this and place in your windows directory. If indeed this is what
was missing, it should now work for you. This is from the original
Windows 98 installation. You do not have to run this file, but rather
select from the multimedia control panel as before.

clouseau,

I've downloaded the file and replaced the one that was in the Windows
directory, but still no dice.

When I tick show on taskbar and click apply, the icon does not appear.

Hello again markabe,

It is odd that this has not solved your problem.

Searching for - windows system tray vol OR volume control missing - I
found the following page which shows what I have already suggested as
well as continuing on to replace the sound card drivers and replace
the volume control from your original CD. Do have a look here:

http://howto.lycos.com/lycos/step/1,,139+24125+9065,00.html

Hopefully taking your problem to these next logical solutions will
return your volume control.
