According to the Indonesian Association of Internet Service Providers, it is
estimated that there are approximately 4 million Internet users in Indonesia
for 2001 as compared to 1.2 million for 2000. However, according to the CIA
World Factbook there was only 400,000 Internet users in Indonesia for 2000
(http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/id.html).

The American Embassy in Indonesia provides the following information:
"The tiny number of internet users in Indonesia grew by 180 percent in 2000 and
is predicted to triple in 2001...Currently only .6 percent of all Indonesians
are logged-on...The number of internet users in Indonesia is expected to more
than triple in 2001 from approximately 1.2 million users to 4 million."

From Indonesia Internet Business Community:
"But, compared to any other countries in the Asia Pacific region, Indonesia has
the lowest growth rate of Internet users with only 0.7 to 0.9 percent
penetration. Mostly blamed for the low penetration percentage is the lack of
infrastructure facilities."

Great information. I've searched and found a lot of information on
this, but you were able to find several new pieces. It is amazing how
by changing search terms (from what I've used) just a little you
tapped into another set of valid information. Thanks,
Joe

from http://www.apjii.or.id/eng/statistics.html

Year Subscribers Users
1996 31000 110000
1997 75000 384000
1998 134000 512000
1999 256000 1000000
2000 400000 1900000
2001 581000 4200000
2002 1000000 8000000 (estimated)

this explains why CIA World Factbook shows 400k users...
it does not differentiate internet users from internet subscribers...
