Hi lxluthr,
Your question is more than a handful, not because finding material is
difficult (as is sometimes the case), but because there is so much of
it!
I suppose it goes without saying that the catastrophe of 9/11
generated an enormous amount of grief almost equaled by the amount of
work necessary to put things back in order. Your request, as I
understand it, is to generate a list of the major business and
government players in that effort.
Since you asked for a list, I'm going to edit out a lot of the
background information that I've accumulated while compiling this
answer, and try to make this as streamlined as possible. I have also
capitalized all company names to make them stand out.
-------------------------------------
--- COMPANIES INVOLVED IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER CLEANUP ---
According to the Engineering News-Record (ENR), published by
McGraw-Hill, there were four main contractors on the job, each of
which worked on a different section of the wreckage and each of which
was to be paid approximately $250,000,000:
AMEC (ASSET MANAGEMENT AND ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY), headquartered in
London (and the only construction company working at both the Pentagon
and WTC disaster sites)
BOVIS LEND LEASE, also headquartered in London
TULLY CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, headquartered in Flushing, N.Y.
TURNER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, moved from NYC to Dallas, TX in 1999, and
owned by a German conglomerate

Other major players at the WTC site according to ENR:
MAZZOCCHI WRECKING INC., East Hanover, N.J., supplied the lion's
share of the site's heavy equipment.
D.H. GRIFFIN WRECKING CO., based in Greensboro, N.C., was the WTC
project demolition consultant.
WEEKS MARINE INC., the Cranford, N.J., was the firm responsible for
offloading by barge from Manhattan more than 1.2 million tons of
structural steel and other debris.

Tully, in conjunction with partner A.G. PEGNO CONSTRUCTION, was also
awarded a contract by NYC worth about $92 million to reconstruct the
subways damaged beneath the WTC.

Here are two more companies written about by ENR which played key
roles in the cleanup:
INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING CENTER,
coordinated the distribution of almost 10,000 respirators and
thousands of hardhats and safety glasses to construction workers, fire
and police personnel and even the National Guard.
MUESER RUTLEDGE CONSULTING ENGINEERS, based in New York City, assessed
and oversaw repairs to the World Trade Center's slurry wall
foundation, which keeps the Hudson River at bay.

WESTON SOLUTIONS INC was heavily involved in environmental work at the
World Trade Center cleanup

--- GOVERNMENT ENTITIES INVOLVED IN THE WTC CLEANUP ---
There were dozens, of course, but most heavily involved were probably:
DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION (DDC) of the City of New York
(oversaw the cleanup for the City of New York)
http://enr.construction.com/features/buildings/archives/020422a.asp
U.S. DEPT. OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
NEW YORK CITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (this agency, plus HUD,
mentioned above, administer the WTC Business Recovery Grant Program)
http://www.newyorkbiz.com/WTC/WTCBusRecoveryGrantPrg.html
OSHA was heavily involved because of the obviously dangerous workplace
conditions at the WTC site.
U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS was involved in the cleanup, as well as
taking steps to tighten protection at the dozens of Corps locks and
dams. The Corps also was heavily involved in supporting the military
campaign against Al Queda in Afghanistan.

--- COMPANIES INVOLVED IN THE PENTAGON DEMOLITION AND RECONSTRUCTION
---
This project was budgeted at $700,000,000, spent primarily with the
following major contractors:
Project Architect: RTKL, Washington, DC
Project Engineer: KCE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS, P.C., Washington, DC
General Contractor: AMEC plc (also involved in the WTC cleanup)
Truss Erector: FACCHINA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, INC., La Plata, MD
Truss Fabricator: PANEL SYSTEMS, INC., Lorton, VA
Truss Design: ALPINE ENGINEERED PRODUCTS, INC.
Truss Bracing Design: ATLANTIC FRAMING SYSTEMS, Cockeysville, MD
Roof Deck System: MARTIN FIREPROOFING CORP., Buffalo, NY

--- OTHER GOVERNMENT ENTITIES TASKED WITH MAJOR NEW ROLES BY 9/11 ---
Obviously, THE ARMED FORCES (ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, AND MARINES) and
the CIA have been heavily involved in prosecuting the Afghanistan
conflict.
The FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION was seriously burdened with the
consequences of 9/11, having to close all the nation's airports for
several days, and, upon re-launching of the U.S. air transportation
system, having to rework many of the national flight rules and step up
enforcement activities.
The TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION, which was created in
November, 2001 as a direct result of 9/11, is charged with all kinds
of transportation security, including aviation, maritime, land, and
rail.

Well lxluthr-ga, I hope I've supplied enough material to suit your
purposes. Of course there's more, but I believe I have identified
most of the primary business and government entities involved in the
9/11 aftermath.
If you have any question about my response here, please don't hesitate
to ask for a Google Answer Clarification before rating my answer.
Thanks for a challenging question!
