Istvan Ipolyi played viola for the Budapest String Quartet('18-36). I
need both birth & death dates & places. I can pay $4.00.

I've tracked down complete death details and I have the same YOB that
leli-ga mentions and a place of birth as well. Now just to find the
month and date of birth.

Anything you can add about what you've already found that might help?

Regards,
luciaphile-ga

Hi Luciaphile,
Believe it or not, that's all I have for him. All the online
references for him merely give his name, instrument & years of service.
Same for the LP back covers. bluestreak

Luciaphile,
While you are working on Ipolyi, would it be possible for you
to in some way post a link to the article on "The Budapest Odyssey" by
Tully Potter. I'd love to see that article. I tried to access it
online & couldn't.

Hi bluestreak-ga,

The Tully Potter article is not available online, at least not that I
was able to find. The only way I was able to access it was going to a
library that subscribed to "The Strad."

You can purchase it online, but the cost is $10.79 per issue. Frankly,
unless you live in the middle of nowhere, I think you'd be better off
trying to get it for free from your library and photocopying the
article.

luciaphile,
Thank you. I will try to read it that way then. The Budapest
is my favorite string quartet, with the Busch a close second. An odd
twist of fate that their careers overlapped each other so closely &
both fled the Nazies at the same time. I'm always boggled at history's
odd "coincidences". Bluestreak

Good news. leli has completed her work. So since you found
the most data, the credit has to go to you for a sucessful answer. I
would like to know where ujvidek is. Is it in Norway? Do you remember?
Anyway, could you re-post your comment as an answer so I could rate &
tip you? You're beyond compare, luciaphile!

Hi bluestreak-ga,

As always, thanks for your question. I only wish I could have found
the complete DOB for you.

Istvan Ipolyi was born in Ujvidek in 1886 and died in Bergen, Norway
on 2 January 1955, p. 421; p. 427.

"Budapest Odyssey," by Tully Potter. The Strad, vol. 112: 1332 April
2001, pp 420-427.

There are no references in the Strad article or I'd try and track
those down.

Regarding his birthplace, Ujvidek, this is one of those areas that has
been part of different countries at different places and times. It's
the Hungarian spelling for Novi Sad a municipality of Serbia. It's
been part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, part of Serbia, part of
Yugoslavia. The timeline below was the closest I could come to
Ipolyi's birth year, which would seem to suggest the city was part of
Serbia when Ipolyi was born.

"budapest quartet"
"istvan ipolyi"

I came across the Strad article while researching Emil Hauser.

I hope this answers your question. If you need additional information,
please ask for clarification and I'll do my best to assist you.

How you do it I can only admire. You get so much. You once said that
you happen to be good on what I ask. Since I ask mostly about birth &
death details for people, you might be good at my next batch of
questions. There are 3 more Budapest Str.Quartet members. Have you
seen yet a question I posted especilly for you? Tonight & tomorrow I
will post another 26 questions on people. I hope you won't abandon me!
As usual, you have all my gratitude for helping me. Bluestreak

Hello bluestreak

Here's a clue to get the ball rolling.

His dates are 1886-1955 according to this page from the University of
Iowa stored by Google:

Ipolyi, Istvan, 1886-1955.
://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache:EBK1sJDsCg4C:infohawk.uiowa.edu/ALEPH/V72Q7287NR7Y627BVSM6SPPT31E12XJLNN62FJP6YH71JA6VMF-02936/FULL-SET/000004-999-F+Istvan+Ipolyi&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Same dates here:

Ipolyi Istvan 1886-1955 ungarsk…

1886 as his birth year is also given at the Library of Congress:

Author: Ipolyi, István, 1886- [from old catalog]
Title: Innføring i musikkspråkets opprinnelse og
                  struktur.
Published: [Bergen] J. W. Eides [1952]
Description: 70 p. music. 23 cm.
LC Call No.: MT6.I7
Subjects: Music -- Instruction and study. [from old
                  catalog]
Control No.: 8382278

Although I found at least one site agreeing that he was a member of
the Budapest String Quartet from 1918, here's one saying 1917:

1917-36 Ipolyi member of the Budapest String Quartet

Here's another saying the Quartet was founded in 1917:

I wonder if he spent time in Norway, since he was published there
(practice exercises, I think) three years before his death?

Hi bluestreak-ga,

I'm posting what I have here as a comment--don't have complete DOB and
doesn't look I'll be able to find it.

Hello leli,
It's my pleasure to meet you! I wanted to know if you were
finished with your work on this particular question? If you were
still working on it, I'll leave it open. So far, you were the first to
post a comment. But luciaphile has provided a date of death & a place
of birth, although I have no idea what country that it is. So far, no
one has been able to locate a date of birth. If you can find it, I can
give you credit, but if not, then lucia has provided more of the data
that I requested. I also wanted to ask you, are you working on any of
my remaining 48 questions? I considering pulling them & replacing
them with 20 others. About 20 or my questions haven't been commented
on. Could you be enticed to look at Maggie Black, Ann Parsons, or
William Yawkey? No one seems intrigued. I hope I hear from you.

Hello bluestreak

Thanks for your message. Luciaphile got much further with Ipolyi than
I did and should take the credit for finding so much.

I will try to take a look at some of your other questions, though I
have to admit it *is* easy to be put off by the thought that they've
all been researched already and come to a dead end. I'll look out for
the ones with no comment.
It's entirely up to you, but you could post new questions without
closing the old ones. It will be very clear to researchers which
questions are in the fresh batch.

Anyway, nice meeting you and, if I can help, I will.

Leli
