Hello need2no-ga,

I believe I have found the information that you are looking for. The
correct spelling is “Thimerosal”.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website (
http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm ), “Thimerosal is a
mercury-containing organic compound (an organomercurial). Since the
1930s, it has been widely used as a preservative in a number of
biological and drug products, including many vaccines, to help prevent
potentially life threatening contamination with harmful microbes.”

There is a concern regarding the risk of mercury poisoning to children
from the mercury contained in Thimerosal in childhood vaccines.

The FDA website contains a great deal of information on the subject.
I highly recommend that you make a visit.

In an article titled “Recent and Future FDA Action” (
http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm#act ), the following is
stated:

“At present, all routinely recommended vaccines manufactured for
administration to U.S. infants are either thimerosal-free or contain
only trace amounts of thimerosal (less than 0.5 micrograms mercury per
0.5 mL dose); see Table 1.”

Table 1 is titled “Thimerosal and Routine Pediatric Vaccines” (
http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm#t1 ). This table
contains a list of routine pediatric vaccines, the name of the
vaccine, the trade name, and the whether they contain any thimerosal
or not. According to this table, of the routine pediatric vaccines,
only the Tripedia DtaP vaccine and the Engerix B Hepatitis B vaccine
contain trace amounts of thimerosal.

At the website of The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
( http://www.cdc.gov/od/nvpo/thim-ov.htm ), they state the following:

“Thus, since April 2001, all vaccines recommended for routine use
among children are now without thimerosal or with only trace amounts
(hepatitis B, Hib, DTaP vaccine, some of which formerly contained
thimerosal as a preservative and MMR, Polio, Varicella, and
Pneumococcal vaccines which have never contained thimerosal).
Furthermore, as of October 2001, the vast majority of the supplies of
DTaP, Hib, and hep B vaccines are without thimerosal or with only
trace amounts.”

An American Medical Association article titled “Institute Of Medicine
Finds No Link Between Thimerosal In Vaccines And Neurodevelopmental
Disorders In Children; But precaution dictates that thimerosal
exposure should be decreased”, (
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/article/1824-5321.html , webpage dated
Oct 02, 2001), states the following:

“Thimerosal is used in some vaccines and other pharmaceutical
products to prevent bacterial contamination. Vaccines against measles,
mumps, and rubella; varicella; and polio have never contained the
preservative. However, until recently, several other vaccines on the
recommended childhood immunization schedule in the United States did.
They are now manufactured without thimerosal, but an unknown, probably
small number of vaccine doses for hepatitis B; diphtheria, tetanus,
and pertussis; and haemophilus influenzae type B, a form of bacterial
meningitis, are still on clinic shelves. These supplies should not be
used when alternatives are available, said the committee that wrote
the report.

Most children in the United States being immunized today and in the
future are unlikely to receive a vaccine that contains thimerosal.
While the health effects of thimerosal are uncertain, vaccines protect
against real, proven threats to unvaccinated infants, children, and
pregnant women.”

I hope you have found this helpful. Please let me know if you would
like clarification.
