Lola travelled to Figueres and found out that only one art shop there
stamped its canvas with the name Figueres, as it appeared on the
paintings by Urpiano. Miguel joined her in Figueres and was surprised
that no bars or streets were named after Urpiano, when so many had
been named after Dali. It was as if the painter was unknown even in
the town where he had supposedly lived. This did not ring true if
Urpiano really had existed. They went to visit the art shop and
discovered it had only opened in 1978. Paco informed them from
Barcelona that laboratory tests had shown the canvas and wood (from
the frame) of a painting supposedly by Urpiano to be only 8 years old,
ie they had been produced after his death. Lola managed to steal the
list of customers from the art shop in Figueres and narrowed down the
possible suspects to one woman called Angela Hernandez. When they
visited Angela, they could not see any paintings in her house and she
told them she had no time to paint. However, the art shop records
showed she had bought more materials this year than the previous year.
They went back to observe Angela and saw her cooking what looked like
a romantic meal for two. She took it out of the house. They followed
her to a very rich house. They saw Angela inside the house with a man
aged about 30, much younger than Angela who was about 50. In the house
they found a lot of Urpianos paintings in a hidden chamber behind
the library. They realised it was not Angela, but her boyfried who was
producing the paintings supposedly by Urpiano. Lola knew that when the
police were told of all this, they would go and arrest the man. She
felt a measure of solidarity with Angela and arranged a ruse to get
her to come away from Figueres so that she would not get arrested as
well. Lola knew that women sometimes do very foolish things for the
men they love.
