Dear railroadingron-ga

Not an answer to your question, but I know that in general for rare
items you can try ebay.com. Ebay is a virtual auctioning site where
people go to sell all sorts of items to interested buyers, and it well
known for selling rare items. Users can then make a bid, and once the
auction closes the item is sold to the highest bid.
-If you are the buyer you pay the price you bidded.
-If you are the seller, you pay e-bay a fee, usually the 'bidding
increment' price.
Also note that e-bay also has specific country versions to deal with
that particular country, e.g. http://www.ebay.com.au
The general web-address however, is http://www.ebay.com

I also know, off-hand, that Amazon.com is very helpful with rare
books. They sell all sorts of items, but when it comes to books, if
you are looking for a book that is out of print or very rare, they
will use their resources to try and locate one for you.

Finally, one direction you could take is contacting organizations that
specialize in your item. For example, if you are looking for a
specific ceramic vase, you could try finding certain pottery museums
or a museum that deals with the culture that developed your vase.

It may help to mention wherebouts you are located, and what kind of
item you are looking for or the genre it is in.
