Hi,

could you please be a little more specific with regard to what Credit
Cards you would like to accept? To my understanding, most companies
operate internationally, so a US card should work in Canada and vice
versa. A specific "internet merchant account" might limit your ability
to accept certain cards, however. In this case, we would need to know
more about this service to be able to answer your question.

Thanks,

Since I don't know what processing service you use, I can only tell
you that when I travel from Canada to the US and I use my Canadian
VISA/MasterCard, there is no problems. It is processed as any other
Visa/MC by the merchant, and on my statement the US Dollar amount is
converted to the Canadian dollar amount I pay.

So, the answer is: you should be able to accept Canadian cards with no
problem. They are transparent to you--the bank sorts out the details
later. But, you always charge in US Dollars!

If this is the answer you were looking for, I can post it as the
"answer". I can see if I can find some links to support what I've
said, but, like I said, I've done this myself! :)

We want to accept Masterard and Visa. We have a banking relaitonship
in the US which allow us to do this, but because international
transactions are involved with Canadian credit cards, the US bank and
credit card processing chanrges are increased (almost doubled) and
make it impossible for us to do it that way. I am trying to figure out
if I can establish Canadian relationships and make the credit card
processong more cost effective. Thanks

Would a list of Chartered Banks in Canada be acceptable? One of them
will surely deal with you :)

Or, have you considered using Paypal? They don't charge the merchant
extra for CDN vs. US credit cards...

Hello,

May I ask what specific company you get your credit card services
through? I recently had to go through a similar process and may have
an answer for you.

Dear Info,

Just curious. Have you tried to accept a Canadian card
and had it rejected by the bank?

I have been able to accept them via AuthorizeNet online,
with no problem.

Check back with your merchant account. You should be able
to run those cards.

Best wishes,

Your TaxMama-ga

Some comments from a merchant in Canada (me):

Canadian Visas, Mastercards, (and Amex) are processed the same as any
other Visa/MC on the network. If your merchant provider is charging
you more, then they are ripping you off.

For example: In my business, or through my employer, our fees are
identical, whether the card is fom Canada, the US, Japan, or Outer
Mongolia. The cardholder ends up paying any fees assosciated with
currency conversion, as the charge on their bill is converted to their
home currency and the issuer tacks in a percentage fee to the
cardholder.

Establishing relationships with Canadian merchant companies could be
difficult for you. Most merchant accounts in Canada are with major
chartered banks (or one of a handful of large processing companies.
For example, recently, Royal Bank of Canada spun off it's Visa
merchant services and Bank of Montreal spun off it's Mastercard
Merchant services into a new joint company called Moneris solutions.)

Typically, you would need to have a business account in a Canadian
Bank for settlement of the transactions, and you would need to have a
business license somewhere in Canada, (and possibly also need Canadian
citizenship. I had to proce my citizenship when I opened my business
accounts) to open such an account. Also your transactions would be
processed in Canadian dollars.

My best suggestion is to shop around for a better service provider.
Perhaps you could deal directly with a bank instead of with a seocnd
or third tier compnay that charges too much?
