Hi,
An affiliate program is a method of sharing resources with a commerce
company. There are benefits to both sides in this arrangement. The
first is that you can make money with your website, simply by putting
a banner ad of some type on your pages. For anyone clicking on that ad
and purchasing an item, or completing what ever requirement there is
to complete (for instance, a survey form ) you get paid by that
company.
Let's take Barnes and Noble. They have several small and large banners
in their program, (see link below for the affiliate program of Barnes
and Noble). I sign up for the program. They review my page and say
"yes, we would like you as an affiliate. Then I pick the banners I
want on my site and I'm done.
Now, you come to my site and read a book review I have done and decide
to by the book. You use my link to go to B&N and make the purchase.
Since I'm a registered Affiliate I get a percentage of that sale. Most
of the time it's as simple as that.
B&N, or whoever, gets more than their moneys worth as well. They get
free advertising on my site whether you purchase the book or not. So
it works for everyone involved.
I've listed below several links for you which will point you to a
number of affiliate program pages, and some news articles regarding
affiliate programs.
In my experience the most successful affiliate programs work with
websites that are trying to raise money for a particular cause. For
example the Widows organization for 9-11 Firefighters may decide to
raise some money. To do this they get an affiliate program with B&N
and write out a number of book reviews and things of that nature. You
go to the site, and you don't really have extra money to give them,
but you need to buy books for school anyway, so you purchase them
through their website, knowing that they get the kickback money. This
tends to be very successful.
Also, in my experience, it is always better to get the program started
through the company itself rather than through a service. Services
tend to mess things up a bit and really, you don't need them. But that
is just my experience.
