The fan on my Dell PC is making noise. I've read that it's a good idea
when replacing a power supply to get one with more than the minimum
power capacity. My computer is a Pentium 4 Desktop about 1 1/2 years
old. Which power supply should I buy and from whom? How do I know I'm
ordering the right supply?

Hello,

PC power supplies are very cheap now, and can be found on
pricewatch.com (see link below) for as little as $15.00.
Unfortunately, in order to remain competitive, or just to tie you to
their parts department, if you do not use a proprietary Dell power
supply you will blow your motherboard and your power supply! (see two
links below) So all I do is refer you to Dell's Parts Replacement
webpage (see link below) and hope that you can find your powersupply
listed there. I searched the 8200 series (see link below) which is the
latest Pentium 4 line from Dell, and they do not list a replacement
power supply. Of course they offer it, they just do not make it
convenient to purchase on their website. You then would have to call
their toll free 800-449-3355 number and order from one of their sales
reps, making sure to give them the exact model number of your
computer. Searching for the older 8100 systems, I found a 200W power
supply (see link below) which may or may not be for your specific
system. You should look into purchasing at least a 300W or 350W power
supply if you're thinking of upgrades, multiple cdroms/dvd/cdr drives,
etc. Plus this 200W power supply is not even new, it's refurbished,
and costs $27.96 almost double what you could have gotten a 300W power
supply from a 3rd party vendor. If you respond with a clarification
with your exact model number, I'd be more than happy to call Dell or
search their site further to find you the exact power supply you need,
or you can just call them yourself and order it in one go. Thanks for
letting me help you with your question.

Hi Skermit,

The model number on the front of the computer says "Dimension 8100".
There's a bar code sticker on the back that says GFT4N01, but I think
that's probably a sticker that they used to track it in production.

Yeah, if you could tell me exactly which part number to order from
Dell for a 300 or 350W supply, and how much it costs, I'd appreciate
it. That kind of proprietary behavior on the part of Dell really turns
me off, and next time I get a whole new system, it'll be from another
source. Thanks for your help.

Kermit,

A second note: Using one of your links, I went to PC Power and
Cooling's site and see that they have a 300W supply for $89. If you
get the Dell info, I'd like to compare. Those links were good. It
sounds like Gateway and Compact do use industry standard parts, so in
the future I'll probably buy my systems from them.

Best Regards,

Boomering

Great luck! After calling the ever so friendly Maurice from Dell
parts, they have two power supplies listed for your system (I gave
them the service tag number GFT4N01 and he confirmed it to be a 8100
series). Both are listed below:

Part: 250W Power Supply
Part #: 3e466
Price: $49.95

Part: 330W Power Supply
Part #: 24rgy
Price: $59.95

I just spoke to him, and he'll be in all day to take your order if you
wish. I would recommend the 330W power supply if you're thinking
multiple drives, expansion cards, etc. like I said before, but the
250W is fine if you're not. Maurice can be contacted by calling
800-449-3355, pressing 1 at the first menu to enter an extension,
entering 69937 as your 5 digit extension code, and then pressing 5 at
the next menu to purchase parts. You can ask for Maurice, or I'm sure
any of the other sales reps would be more than happy to help you if
you give them your service tag and part number. Just as a reference,
their price for a ~300W is about 4 times more than what I could find
on pricewatch.com (see attached link). But their price really isn't
too bad, and well let's face it, it's the ONLY replacement parts you
can get *shrug*. Glad I could help you and if you have any more
questions, feel free to clarify.

Just as a side comment,

boomering-ga I hope the noise your power supply is making isn't a
hissing one...

Just came across that one from a fellow researcher and thought I'd
share it with you.
