Hello,
The Investment Company Institute (see link below) is a great source of
information on this subject:
"
Since 1961, the Institute has published an annual compilation of facts
and figures on the U.S. mutual fund industry.
"
From page 4 of their U.S. Industry Totals (see link below), they have
information on the number of funds for Equity (or stock) Funds, Hybrid
Funds, Bond Funds, Taxable Money Market Funds, and Tax-Exempt Money
Market Funds. They have information dating yearly back to 1970 but as
per your request, I'll only include 1990, 1995, and 2000. The rest of
the data is of course available a the link provided.
Taxable Tax-Exempt
Equity Hybrid Bond Money Money Market
Funds Funds Funds Market Funds Funds Total
1990 1,099 193 1,046 506 235 3,079
1995 2,139 412 2,177 674 323 5,725
2000 4,385 523 2,208 703 336 8,155
This is the data you're looking for, and for an in-depth analysis
including market share and total assets moved by dollar, I refer you
to their full 2002 edition of the Mutual Fund Fact Book (link below).
I'm glad I could help you find the information you were looking for.
