GNU makes a program called Screen (gnu.org/software/screen) which is useful
for resuming terminal sessions from any computer. I've used this
software a lot and I love it to death. What I want to know is if there
is a program that allows one to resume an X11 Window or X11 session
from any machine running X11 without having to kill and restart the
application? Sort of an X11 window "proxy" like I can do with Screen.

i.e. In screen I can start IRC on one machine, close the window, and
then resume the IRC session from another machine by connecting to my
original machine that I started IRC from. I want to do this with X11
applications.

I heard Sun Microsystems had a product like this, and I'd like more information on
this and any other product that is similar. x-gw comes to mind, but I
don't think it does what I am talking about.

I'd also like to meantion that I am aware VNC can do this, but I want
to be able to move individual X11 windows (and their children), not
the entire session/display, between machines.

Hi there. I'm not sure there is any such tool available - at least, I
haven't come across any before. Your best bet is probably to work out
a way to change the target display while the program is running.

In the meantime, check out: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ which
lets you move mouse and keyboard and clipboard across multiple
systems. Perhaps it would be of use to you?

In responce to seizer-ga:

If there is no such tool available, I'll implement one. That is what
this question is about. As to if it is a good idea, I don't know. I
just think it would be useful to me as I switch workstations
frequently.

I checked out synergy2, and it appears to be an X2X or X2VNC type of
program. That isn't what I'm after at all. Thanks for the comment
though.
