jhh,
The skill of a silversmith is one that can be traced back for
centuries. The fine art of creating objects from silver is one, that
while not as widespread as it once was, is still a valuable skill. In
order to maintain the value of antique silver, it is always best to
leave the maintenance and care to those that are trained. A small
investment in the proper care of your items now will lead to
maintaining the long term value of your silver. There several
craftsmen and silver experts available to take care of your valued
pieces. You said CT, Boston and New York would be your best bets, so
I have tried to keep the listing to those in the general area. All of
these will allow you to mail your pieces (registered and insured, of
course) to them for any work that needs to be done:

Though I have not used Jeffrey for any work, I did speak with him via
a message board and must say I would recommend him. He is the
Executive Director of the Society of Silversmiths (SAS),
http://www.silversmithing.com/, and is on the Advisory Board of the
Association of Restorers. Appears to have impeccable references.
While I did not have any interaction with the following, they are all
either members of the SAS or of the Associtation of Restorers:

Good luck in finding a silversmith that meets your requirements and
needs. If you need any further clarification, please let me know.
And, yes, I am a native North Carolinian and UNC fan.
