I made a backup using MS Backup on a Win95 machine using 14 1.44
disks. I think (but am not sure) that what I effectively backed up was
a zip file but it could as well have been multiple, individual files.
(Contents is Netscape formatted email.) The result is .qic files. Disk
2 is now missing and I really need to get a hold of the rest of the
backup. What can I do?

I don't know if this will work or not, but, I'd like you to tell me
the EXACT contents of disk 1, disk 3 and disk 14 (the last disk)..

I'd like a list of ALL FILES present on those three disks. There may
be a workaround: it's a long shot, but, we'll see...

Hi grogotte,

I have created a 5-disk .qic file set
for testing purposes on a Win95 machine
using MS Backup.

I have investigated the opening of the resulting
.qic files using the standard software,
ignoring the existence of disk number two
of the set.

Conclusions:

If you open up Microsoft backup on a
Windows 95 machine (start > run > backup),
insert the final disk of your set,
select A: from the restore tab, then
double click the .qic file displayed in
the right-hand pane, you should be
presented with a full directory structure in
the left hand pane - you should be able
to discover fom this, the complete
file structure that *should* be accessible
with a complete disk set.

You may be able to restore some files, but
only those completely represented by the data
found on your first disk - any files which
require data from the missing disk or beyond
in order to be reassembled will not be recoverable
by the standard Windows 95 backup program.

Unfortunately I have not been able to
locate a solution for you yet, but
hopefully another researcher may have
experience of software other than the
above, which might be able to rescue the
information existing within your
remaining .qic files. I'll continue to
keep my eyes open for a solution as well.

I tried to access the files using Power Archiver,
from:
http://www.powerarchiver.com
without success.
