Gary Lambert "Pete" Nugent was an all-time great idol of tap dance.
Was member of famed tap trio "Pete,Peaches & Duke"('31-37). He was
born Jul.16,'09 and died Apr.'73. He had quit dancing around '52, and
in the 60's was managing a Motown group. I need his date & place of
death. I can pay $10.00.

I've found his place of death, but the exact date of death is proving
elusive, but I'm still working on it.

Hi bluestreak-ga,

After much searching in every newspaper index and most of the
databases as well as several search engines I've got access to, I've
narrowed down the date of death for Pete Nugent considerably.

The source I've found puts it happening between April 25 and April
30th of 1973.

To be honest, I don't think it's going to be possible to narrow it
much further.

I can post what I've got and let another researcher try and take it
from there if you'd like.

Regards,
luciaphile-ga

Hi luciaphile!
Are you pretty sure you can't nail it? If that's so, then
what else can we do? You might as well post it, so your work doesn't
go to waste. I will try to make it up to you on your next hit, with an
extra good tip.

bluestreak,

Before I post an answer I'll explain a bit more about why I don't
think I can determine the date any closer than I have and if you're
still okay with my posting it, I'll do so--you've been a great
customer and I want to do right by you.

I have access to an academic library at a research university that has
a pretty extensive array of sources. You're familiar enough with my
work now to probably have an idea of how I tackle these kinds of
questions. I've checked out the standard reference sources and while
I've found biographical materials in various sources, other than the
April 1973 figure, there is no date listed in these. After this, I
went to the stacks and have perused every book I could find remotely
close to the subject of jazz, tap dance and African-American
entertainers. Several references are made to Nugent and the trio, but
no death date. He rated a chapter in Marshall Stearns' excellent book
"Jazz Dance," but the book was written before Nugent's death. I
checked the 1979 edition hoping to find an updated bit piece about
Nugent to no avail.

I've also searched every print and online newspaper index for the
major papers as well as alternative and ethnic papers. I have found
two references in an African American newspaper to Nugent's failing
health. The last mention of Nugent is dated 25 April 1973. The SSDI
and American National Biography has him dying in April of 1973, so I'm
assuming he must have died between the 25th and the 30th.

Because Nugent died in relative obscurity, it makes sense that the
major papers wouldn't have run an obit. It's possible that an
alternative or ethnic paper did run an obit, but those types of
periodicals are not typically well indexed or even available.

Let me know how you want me to proceed.

As always, regards,
luciaphile-ga

It looks as if I'm not going to get a hit on Pete. Please don't put
any more time into Pete. Could I persuade you to tackle Emil Hauser,
violinist? I will definitely make this up to you on your next
sucessful match with a correspondingly large tip. Your time does
indeed have value to me, since you are consuming your valuable time
trying to help me clean up my website. As a researcher, who is still
hunting for these guys as you guys are, I know we don't get all hits.

Hi sparky4ca,
I posted a question just for you, but I guess it's easy to
miss it. Anyway, could I impose on you to take another shot at my
former baseball owners who have initials for their middle names. I
still have Joseph J. Lannin, Charles W. Somers, Donald L. Barnes, John
W. Allyn, Jr. and James E. Gaffney. I just know they're out there
somewhere. bluestreak

According to the Biography and Genealogy Master Index which I am able
to search through my library’s website, there is a refernce to Pete
Nugent, 1909-1973, in:
“American National Biography. 24 volumes. Edited by John A. Garraty
and Mark C. Carnes. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. [AmNatBi]
“
Unfortunately I don’t have access to that book(s). If you have access,
check it out. It might have the date we want.

Search strategy
Google.ca
	"Pete Nugent" tap
	"Pete Nugent" dance
	"Pete Nugent" april 1973
	"Pete Nugent" death
also searched a number of databases connected to our local library.

I’m sorry, bluestreak, but I don’t think I can add anything else to
the excellent work that has already been done.

Forgot to mention, American National Biography is also available
online, but it's a bit pricy:

sparky4ca-ga--that's how I started, actually. There were three
citations in Biography & Genealogy Master Index and I checked them all
out in addition to the other efforts I mentioned above, but came no
closer to finding an actual date.

Hi sparky4ca!
It's always good hearing from you. I have checked out the NYC
archives. To no avail. If someone in New State dies outside of NYC's 5
boroughs, one can order their certificate of death photo-coyy for
$15.00, and there is no problem. I have done that several times. If,
however, your subject died WITHIN one of NYC's 5 borough, forget it!
One MUST provide either blood relationship or proof of a vested
interest, such as an insurance co. The NYC people are the strictest
I've ever encountered. I once requested 10 death certificate
photo-copies with a check for $150. They returned it with a request of
proof of vested interest and my own photo-ID. Money can't temmpt these
people. Also, concerning Nugent and
American National Biography, as luciaphile stated, she checked with
them & they only listed Pete as April,'73. But I will call the San
Francisco library today to see if I can access it through them. I
don't want to pay the $89.00 for a personal annual subscription,
although I have paid more for a couple of Ancestry.com products and a
couple of other online services(locateme.com). Don't feel bad
sparky4ca, I can't out-research luciaphile either. bluestreak

That seems strange for NYC to be so particular, especially when we're
talking about such old records. Surely that couldn't be concerned with
the "privacy rights" of someone who died 100 years ago! Perhaps posing
a question to them would help?

"If the records are only for people with a vested interest (as in
descendants) what happens if there aren't any descendants?"

http://www.nyc.gov/html/doris/html/3vital.html
There are so many stories that these people could answer. Even the
records themselves are a story. Like what's up with the gaps? Was
there fires or floods? Are they simply not all indexed yet? Etc...

Another thought on Ruppert:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ruppert/index.htm

Is a page written by a man who seems to be a descendent of Ruppert or
his family. Perhaps this man (he has a link to contact him by email)
would consent to sending a request in for the birth or death
certificate for you.

Boy, sparky4ca, you don't know how much those beaurocrats have denied
people like me, my information. Ruppert,Breadon,Gaffney,Payson were
all born in NYC. Lannin and Dreyfuss died in NYC. Four other of my
research subjects died in NYC. They could have made my life a lot
easier. 3 of my above subjects were born in the 1800's & Payson was
born in '03. Lannin died in '28 and Dreyfuss died in '32. Just what
the beaurocrats are protecting is a mystery. How precious can the
privacy of long dead people be? The problem is getting worse too. Due
to fears of identity theft, California has pressured Ancestry.com and
Roots.com to remove the California birth index from online. Don't they
realize that Ancestry.com has millions of identities online to assume.
The Cal. birth index was a valid research tool. Unknown to them, it
can still be found & accessed in obscure, dark corners on the fringe
of the web.
             The vital records divisions of
Michigan,Ohio,Cal,NY,FL,and Mass. are easy to obtain death
certificates for if one has a date of birth. NY does not include NYC.
The states of IL,PA and MO and NYC will not give death certificates
unless you're related or can prove a vested interest. It's a tough
business when one needs dozens of birth & death dates & yrs. If you
know of anyone who can apply for these records for me, I'd be
interested. Please let me know if that's a possibitity.
