Hello ettybay,
What a great question! A 'devil dog' I presume?
Q. Where can I find the WWII Marine Corps Guadalcanal casualty list?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 1 -
The master list for WWII is maintained by the Naval Historical Center.
They offer a 'pay for service' that allows you to order the microfiche
or microfilm. Here is what their site says :
Naval History Archives
"this Bureau of Naval Personnel Combat Casualty IBM printout and the
casualty code description on six reels of microfilm, NRS-1980-1 and
also available on sixty-one sheets of microfiche, F-457"
http://www.history.navy.mil/wars/index.html#anchor12058
The quick way to get this list is to pay for the pages that you would
require. In order to find out what pages you would require, you would
want to talk to the Operational Archives Branch which can be reached
at the following number and address:
(202) 433-3224
Department of the Navy
Naval Historical Center
805 Kidder Breese Street SE
Washington Navy Yard, DC 20374-5060
http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/nhcorg10.htm
I called and spoke with them and they said you will need to fax in
what you are looking for, and you would also have to pay first. You
can pay by check, payable to the Department of the Navy, and I think
it's only a $5 dollar minimum order. You could also mail in what you
are looking for with your payment.
You may wish to call and clarify with them first, as the process was a
little confusing with regards to fax. The lady was very friendly, and
here is the fax number :

Here is a link to an order sheet that you may want to have handy for
if/when you call. You can 'jot' down what microfiche they give you:

Q. Can you provide me with it as well?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was unable to find a list that is publicly available online. There
is a free way to approach this however:
Option 2 -
According to the site, the list of casualties is also compiled in a
set of books. The site notes that you will probably be only to find
these books at larger university libraries, and through book loan
programs.
Here are the books that the site tells us this information is located
in :
"US Navy. Naval Historical Division. United States Submarine Losses,
World War II. Washington: Naval History Division, 1963. (Includes crew
lists.) OCLC 06579378"
"US Navy. Office of Information. Combat Connected Naval Casualties,
World War II, by States. 2 vols. Washington: Office of Information,
1946. (Vol. 1 covers Alabama through Missouri; vol.2. covers Montana
through Wyoming and other areas) OCLC 03829654"
If you can get to to a good library, you just might be able to track a
copy of them down.
To help find this answer I searched Google for:
"Guadalcanal" "Marine corps casualties"
I hope this answers your question. Should you need clarification or
further assistance, please ask before rating as I would love to help.
Thanks for the question and Semper Fi!
