I've tried Corbis and Google Images, but I can't find a suitable
high-res image of a stereotypical 1950s refrigerator. Can you help? It
doesn't matter if it's free or licensed (royalty free only). Thanks
for your help.

Good Day jboyden-ga,

I have found some material which should be just what you are looking
for. It is a link to an appliance antique store, their refrigerator
inventory to be more specific. Just click on a link and you will see
the listed refrigerator. The refrigerators listed have been made in
the periods from 1928, to 1957.

At a quick glance, if you are looking just for 1950s refrigerators,
the link I am providing will give you access to pictures of:

- One 1952 Hotpoint refrigerator
- Two different 1953 Westinghouse refrigerators
- One 1953 General Electric refrigerator
- One 1953 Philco refrigerator
- One 1954 General Electric refrigerator
- One 1954 Norge refrigerator
- One 1957 General Electric refrigerator

Some of these look more typical than others, while a couple look quite
fancy. If this is not what you are looking for, please give me more
specifics on the required picture, and I will see what else I can
find. You also may be able to find more images using the following
search strategy:

Search strategy: Google search for "antique appliances"

Thank you for your question.

Thanks for the reply. What I'm actually looking for a high-res
professional-looking image I can use for a presentation, not a low-res
snapshot. And it needs to be something I can use legally (either
through a royalty-free licensing agreement or because the image is
part of the public domain). The appliance itself should be clean and
in good shape, lit professionally, and with the door closed.

Good Day jboyden-ga,

Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for in my original answer.
When you said hi-resolution, I interpreted that as "not clipart".

I have searched the net for about two hours now, and had limited
success finding something more suitable. I have found one image which
I enlarged a few hundred percent using bipolar pixalization for better
results, and I touched it up a bit to make it look as best as
possible.

The original image came from http://www.elmirastoveworks.com/ , a
company which designs 1950s looking appliances. Apparently the retro
look is coming back, and they have dedicated a whole line of
appliances to that era.

The modified image which is much larger can be found at
http://www.bytechcanada.net/fridge/

A JPG image is available, and a TIFF as well. I hope this is very
close to what you are looking for, as I can not seem to find anything
better with the additional specifications you provided.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. I can
enlarge the image a little more, but the quality of the image will
obviously suffer the larger the image is. Although I can touch it up
here and there after enlarging, there is only so much I can do. :(

slawek-ga

Thanks for your hard work. Unfortunately, since this photo is the
intellectual property of the manufacturer, I can't snatch it from
their site and legally use it (I was looking for a photo I could
license legally from a stock photo company such as Corbis.). It's also
not hi-res. My search continues. Anyway, thanks for your work on this.

If only I was still living with my grandma, I could simply take a
picture. The refrigerator that she currently uses is probably just
about the right age.
