Hi hunter,
While working on this question, it came to my mind that you may be
referring to healthclubs? I've started the count for actual *gyms* in
the US. Let me know exactly which facilities you mean. Thanks!

According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub
Association (IHRSA), a not-for-profit trade association representing
health & fitness facilities, gyms, spas, sports clubs and suppliers
worldwide,
"The total number of health and sports clubs in the United States grew
by just over 2% during the first six months of 2002, reaching 18,203
facilities in July. The number of health clubs and gyms in the U.S.
has increased consistently over the past five years, up 39% from
13,097 businesses in 1997."
