In the 1920 Census, Andrzej (Andrew) and Marja (Mary) Czernek are
homeowners living in Buffalo, NY in the 9th Ward at 1093 Smith Street
and 182 Detroit Street. This site has at least one of those addresses
enumerated:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~polish/index.htm

I haven't been able to find them using a manual search in the 1930
Census; they are not at the same address. They are in Buffalo,
probably in the same neighborhood, though I've searched the EDs and
failed.

I'm hoping that someone with access to Ancestry.com or another site
might be able to find them.

Best regards,

It appears there is a Mary Czernek and her 14 year old son Edward
Czernek livng in Buffalo, but no Andrew. I'll list the information
here, and a link to a posting of the census page image. I don't know
how to determine the address from the images, so I can't give you that
info.

Czernek, Mary Age: 56 Birthplace: Poland Roll: T626_1426 Race:
White Page: 12A State: New York ED:120 County: Erie Image: 0502
Township: Buffalo Relationship: Head

Czernek, Edward Age: 14 Year:1930 Birthplace: Roll:T626_1426
Race: Page:12A State: New York ED:120 County: Erie Image:0502
Township: Buffalo
Relationship: Son

I placed a copy of the scan at http://www.uptondesign.com/czernek4.jpg

Let me know if I can give you any more information.

You're a champ. I have access to NARA microfilms and will get the
full page and address. Andrew and Mary were separated (though they
reported their marriage arrangements differently in the 1920 Census).
There are always surprises in this -- Robert Falke is also living in
the same residence.

Mr. Falke later went on to join the Army paratroops in WWII and was
one of the first to land in Normandy. He later became the president
of Eagle Stamp Co. in Cleveland.

You've made my Thanksgiving, even if apparently you're not a Google
researcher!

Could you tell me how to tell the street address from the census
sheets? It seems in some of the older census' they wrote the street
in the margin, but most of the time I can't read it. On the 1930, I
don't see that. I can never figure out the actual house #.

BTW, there was no Andrew Czernek in the 1930 New York census, by my
search.

Dyermaker --

First, you have to understand how exciting all of this is. It's
prompted me to call my cousin, as he's still living in the same
address as 25 years ago (when I last saw him). I think that I'll wait
until later today, inasmuch as I'm going for maximum surprise!!

As you note, the addresses are typically written in the margin.
Inasmuch as they were enumerating house-by-house, the street may well
be written on the previous page. I won't get a chance to check these
microfilms at NARA today but will definitely let you know within the
next week.

There's a possibility that the last name is misspelled (often
Czernik), if your database isn't Soundexed. BTW, I've tried to send
you a private e-mail via your web address admin e-mail (@att.bi.com
instead of home.com).
