Hi! Thanks for the interesting question.

It seems easy at first but employee negativity could build into
different effects overtime. The following articles discuss such
effects and the possible cures you may have for it. I will provide
small snippets form the articles that directly answer your question
but I highly suggest that you read them in their entirety to get a
better perspective.

In summary, the following effects are manifested when employees have a
negative disposition in the workplace.

1. Lower Production
2. Absenteeism
3. Loss of Motivation
4. Employee turnover problems
5. Poor Customer service
6. Avoiding work
7. Frustration
8. And even sometimes violence could occur.

“Nothing affects employee morale more insidiously than persistent
workplace negativity. It saps the energy of your organization and
diverts critical attention from work and performance. Negativity
occurs in the attitude, outlook, and talk of one department member, or
in a crescendo of voices responding to a workplace decision or event.”

“Negativity is a vexing problem that can be the deciding factor
between success and failure, both for yourself as a manager, and for
your organization.”

“If managers don't deal with negativity, it can take over. Often,
productivity plummets. People may miss more work, or spend their days
complaining. Many - even the positive employees - may lose their
motivation. Worst of all, negativity can affect turnover and
recruiting. ‘Some people are just negative and they don't mind that
type of environment, so they're not going to quit. However, you will
not draw positive people into your environment. They can actually
often feel the negativity. It's almost a tangible aura,’ Harpool
says.”

The following example meanwhile is taken from a healthcare publication
so the terms patient can be substituted with customers or clients.

“The Attitude Virus is everywhere. It's contagious and it can spread
in minutes. It infects the healthy worker and kills motivation.
Symptoms include rudeness, poor service, lack of motivation, and
increased stress. Long term effects result in employee turnover, lost
productivity, patient complaints, patient no-shows, increased employee
and patient liability, and a drain on profits.”

“People -- employees, managers, and owners -- with bad attitudes spend
the better part of their days figuring out ways to avoid work,
complaining about the work they have to do, or redoing work. This is
mainly the result of dissatisfaction on the job. The cost of all this
in the U.S. alone is in the hundreds of billions of dollars.”

Another effect that could be attributed to employee negativity, which
was not mentioned in the previous articles, is the probable
frustration and even violence in the workplace.

“Nearly a third of 1,305 workers who responded to a telephone survey
about desk rage admitted to yelling at someone in the office, and 65
percent said workplace stress is at least occasionally a problem for
them. Work stress had driven 23 percent of the respondents to tears,
and 34 percent blamed their jobs for a loss of sleep.”
