The result of my research might be a little surprise for you, because
James Gaffney died younger than 70 years.

He was born 7 March 1868 and died 17 August 1932. So he was only 64
years old. I found this information confirmed by two different
sources, and I am absolutely sure that this James Gaffney is the one
you are looking for. I find it highly unlikely that there was a second
James Gaffney who died in New York City on the very same day.

The results of my research in brief:

James Gaffney was born 7 March 1868 in Manhattan, New York City. His
parents were Patrick Gaffney and Anne (or Ann) Gaffney (nee
Masterson). Patrick Gaffney was born 14 November 1840 in Ireland, his
wife was born 1845 in Ireland. Patrick Gaffney died 7 February 1881 in
New York City, Anne Gaffney died 12 June 1902 in New York City.
James Gaffney had 5 younger sisters: Anne, Margarete, Mary, Elizabeth,
and Agnes.
On 17 August 1932, James Gaffney died on Long Island, New York City.
