Hello,
The information you request is probably available only from the most
reputable source for market data on retail real estate, the National
Research Bureau (link below):
"The National research Bureau is the premier provider of retail real
estate information in the United States. NRB has published information
for the shopping center industry for more than 45 years. Its database
of information on almost 40,000 U.S. shopping centers is the only
comprehensive and detailed information source on shopping centers
available."
Most of their information is only available through purchase and isn't
available free to the public (link below). Their full database is
available to be searched online for $995 a year, or offline on CD-ROM
for $2,195. They however put out a quarterly newsletter with condensed
statistics, and from the latest newsletter I found your top 10 list of
GLA (gross leaseable area):
Top Ten Existing Centers by Size
Rank Center Name City State GLA Year Open
1 DEL AMO FASHION CENTER Torrance CA 3,000,000 1961
2 KING OF PRUSSIA PLAZA & COURT King of Prussia PA 2,900,663 1962
3 SAWGRASS MILLS & THE OASIS Sunrise FL 2,700,000 1990
4 MALL OF AMERICA Bloomington MN 2,574,525 1992
5 WOODFIELD Schaumburg IL 2,270,000 1971
6 ROOSEVELT FIELD MALL Garden City NY 2,146,029 1956
7 THE GALLERIA Houston TX 2,100,000 1970
8 LAKEWOOD CENTER MALL Lakewood CA 2,057,700 1951
9 SOUTHCOAST PLAZA Costa Mesa CA 2,022,000 1967
10 OAKBROOK CENTER Oak Brook IL 2,013,000 1962
>10 ONTARIO MILLS Ontario CA 1,700,000 1997
They do not distinguish between enclosed and open air facilities in
their newsletter though, and only do that in their subscription
information. I provided a sample listing in the links below to show
you what they have to offer. As you can see, they do provide
information about each mall's configuration (enclosed/open
air/strip/etc.), and using their proprietary database, you can
generate your own listings for both enclosed and open air catagories.
Ontario Mills does not rank on the top 10 GLA as shown, I found their
GLA from their company website linked below.
Some interesting facts to note are building area vs. GLA. One would
think the Mall of America would have the largest GLA, but they do not.
Their gross building area (GBA) is roughly 4,200,000 sq. ft., but
about half of that is non-leaseable space. Meanwhile, the Del Amo
Fashion Center lists their GBA at over 3,100,000 but most of that
space is GLA, pushing them higher on the list. Thank you for the
opportunity to answer this question for you, and I hope you found my
information valuable.
