Hi Frankie,

Hello again. This is indeed an interesting question, and a search on
google produced 5,440 pages containing the phrase "how long is a piece
of string"

Basically, a string has a length but the length is unknown and there
is no quantitative answer to it. This implies that when someone
replies to a question with "How long is a piece of string", it means
that the answer will be difficult to find given the information
available.

An example would be.....

MindVision mentions on one of their pages, "One of the first questions
that people ask is "How much does it cost to produce a CD-Rom?" The
short answer is between a few thousand and millions of dollars - which
translates to 'how long is a piece of string'."

Other things which this question could represent are --

There is a book titled "How Long is a Piece of String" by Rob Eastaway
and Jeremy Wyndham. ISBN: 1861055056
"It consists of entertaining and thoughtprovoking questions on topics
not obviously related to maths, and a discussion of each. The authors
say that "give us a topic that we care about, and we all become
mathematicians", and set out to prove it."

Or, if you prefer something geeky, you could have a look at the String
object of JavaScript.
http://tech.irt.org/articles/js037/
"This article will describe some of the methods associated with the
String object, and how to use them to find characters or strings
within strings, to replace characters and portions of text, to change
the case, and to alter the style and formatting of text."

Cheers,
aditya2k
