badog,
Before Rating my Answer, please try these methods in your scanner
software, and if they don't seem to help, Post a Request for
Clarification instead of a Rating, and I will be glad to come up with
some other things for you to try.
To come up with these suggested methods, I used the image of the
Preview Window (Figure 22) on page 23 (of 95 total pages) of the Umax
Powerlook 3000 Scanner MagicScan Manual located at:
http://www.umax.de/download/ScanPC/MS4man.pdf
The manual is in Acrobat Reader format. If you do not already have
Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, it can be downloaded at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
First of all, I need to ask if you have verified that the total image
you are scanning is smaller than, or equal to, the size of the glass
area on your scanner. If the document you are scanning is larger than
the glass, only the area on the glass will be scanned (and usually
there will be a 1/16" to 1/4" inch "border" around the edge of the
glass where the image will not be scanned).
Have you tried putting your mouse arrow just where the lower left-hand
corner of the Preview Window meets the rest of the screen, to see if a
two-ended arrow <-> appears? In Figure 22, this is labeled "Resize
window tab", and the two-ended arrow means you can left-click right
there, and holding the left-click button down, drag the corner of the
Preview Window down and to the left to make the window larger on your
screen. To be able to resize your Preview Window as large as possible,
you may need to left-click on the top bar of the window, and holding
the left-click button down, drag the window so that the upper
left-hand corner is aligned against the upper left-hand corner of your
screen. Then left click on the "Resize window tab" in the bottom
right-hand corner and drag it down and to the right.
Have you tried altering the "Scaling controls" in the upper left-hand
corner of the Preview Window? First, change the scale type in the box
just to the right of these numbers to "percent", if it is not set to
that already. These probably contain "1.00" and "1.00" right now, if
that is the driver installation default. Try setting the Scaling
Control numbers to "0.75" and "0.75" (show image at 3/4 actual size)
or "0.50" and "0.50" (show image at 1/2 actual size). Depending on the
size of the image being scanned, you may need to go even smaller. You
may need to click the "Preview" button to the right of the Scaling
boxes to get the new Scale to take effect. Once you have viewed the
whole image, you will probably (though not necessarily) want to change
the scaling percentages back to their original settings, because I
believe that these two boxes also control your actual scanned image
size.

Again, if your Preview Window does not look the same as Figure 22, or
if neither of these suggestions seems to help, please do not post a
Rating for this question. Instead, post a Request for Clarification,
and I will be glad to come up with some other things for you to try.
