when entering a part numbe in an item list or a name in a customer list QB allows only a few ms between keystrokes. Delay too long (say 2/10 sec between keystrokes) and it will treat the entry as a new number or name. So when keying in partnumber 567890 if there is a very short delay after 7 QB will take you to part 890. My question- how do I chnge the time interval allowed between keystrokes in QB?

This is not something you can change. Let me explain. The ability to go to a particular entry in a list is called autoscroll. Some list boxes can only autoscroll on the first letter. You press B, you get the first B entry. If you then press E, regardless of how quickly, you get the first E entry. QuickBooks' list boxes can do better than that. As you type letters, it can accumulate them to find matching entries past the first letter. However, it has to have some way to know that it should stop accumulating and start over. It does this by using a timer. If the next keystroke appears within the specified time, it accumulates, otherwise, it starts over. The delay period is embedded in the list box itself. It is not exposed anywhere where you can set it. The developers selected a time delay that they thought would work for most people. Unfortunately, if it is too short for you, then you have to learn to type a little faster <grin>. You can also use autoscroll for the first 3 digits or so, then cursor or drag the scroll thumb the rest of the way. If you write to the folks at Intuit suggesting that the delay is too short, they may be willing to increase it in future versions. - Hammer
