Hello degard, and thank you for the question.
Well, a good place to start searching for this profound question is of
course www.who-is--god.com (yes there really is one!) which has to say
this on the subject:
From a Biblical viewpoint:
"Who Is God? The Ultimate Question of All to Ask
Who is God? Undoubtedly, this is the question that surfaces once we
establish the existence of a supernatural designer of the universe. Is
He a personal God, or merely a life-force creator? Is He an almighty
and self-existing being, or a multiplicity of beings with various
identities and roles in our universe? How do we know where do we
start?
Who Is God? Look to the Bible for the Answer
Who is God? Once youve established that the Bible is a credible and
reliable document, this is the first place to look for the character
and attributes of God. In Jeremiah 29:13, God himself tells us:
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
As you explore the Bible, you will discover the nature of God. He is
Spirit infinite, eternal and unchanging. He is sovereign
omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipresent
(all places at all times). He is perfectly holy and perfectly just. He
is wisdom, power, glory, righteousness, mercy, faithfulness, goodness,
beauty, and patience. God is love. God is truth."

From a scientific viewpoint:
"Stephen Hawking's God"
"Theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg suggests
that in fact this is not much of a God at all. Weinberg notes that
traditionally the word "God" has meant "an interested personality".
But that is not what Hawking and Lederman mean. Their "god", he says,
is really just "an abstract principle of order and harmony", a set of
mathematical equations. Weinberg questions then why they use the word
"god" at all. He makes the rather profound point that "if language is
to be of any use to us, then we ought to try and preserve the meaning
of words, and 'god' historically has not meant the laws of nature."
The question of just what is "God" has taxed theologians for thousands
of years; what Weinberg reminds us is to be wary of glib definitions."

An encyclopedic definition: (and a lengthy discussion on the subject)
"The proper noun God refers to a single ultimate, infinite source of
being in the universe. This is in contrast with the common noun god
(used in lower case), which refers to an immortal supernatural being
with great powers. No undisputed evidence has ever been found for the
existence of God or of gods, but it is not unusual for people to
believe in their existence through the practice of a religion. Even
believers in the existence of particular gods may consider others to
be purely fictional."

A humorous viewpoint:
"According to the Hitchhikers Guide, the Babel fish was put forth as
an example for the non-existence of God:
Something that perfect could only exist if there was a god to create
it, so the Babel fish proved there was a god. Proof denies faith
however, and faith is the standard by which we are to know God. Oops,
says God, without faith I have no followers, and disappears in a
theological puff of smoke. (At which point humanity goes on to prove
black is white and gets killed at the next zebra crossing)."

"What is God?
God is different things to different people. Many people believe
Jesus is god, or Allah is god, or Buddha is is god or no one is god.
Others believe the sun is god, the Earth is god and everything in the
universe is made up of god. Some believe that there is no god and
some think that they are god.
The planets used to be called gods and so did volcanoes, thunders
storms, rhinos, cows, snakes, goats and a whole bunch of other natural
things. Not much mention has been made however, about the ant god,
the cockroach god, the pea god, the sand god, the bottle top god, the
shoe lace god or the pencil eraser god, why do you think that is?
Then there are the gods of worship, you know, those things that people
spend more time thinking about than their own family, friends,
spirituality or place in life. Things like the television, alcohol,
music, drugs, sex, fashion, money, and and so on. If god is so great
wouldn't you want to give it more priority than everything else?
What about the infinite electricity that flows through everything in
creation or the love that a wanting mother has for her newborn child?
What about humanity, habits, goals, change, time, the here and the
now?
What about the imagination?"

an intermediary between me and him.
