Hello degard, and thank you for the question.

Well, a good place to start searching for this profound question is of
course www.who-is--god.com (yes there really is one!) which has to say
this on the subject:

From a Biblical viewpoint:
"Who Is God? The Ultimate Question of All to Ask
Who is God? Undoubtedly, this is the question that surfaces once we
establish the existence of a supernatural designer of the universe. Is
He a personal God, or merely a life-force creator? Is He an almighty
and self-existing being, or a multiplicity of beings with various
identities and roles in our universe? How do we know – where do we
start?

Who Is God? Look to the Bible for the Answer
Who is God? Once you’ve established that the Bible is a credible and
reliable document, this is the first place to look for the character
and attributes of God. In Jeremiah 29:13, God himself tells us:

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

As you explore the Bible, you will discover the nature of God. He is
Spirit – infinite, eternal and unchanging. He is sovereign –
omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipresent
(all places at all times). He is perfectly holy and perfectly just. He
is wisdom, power, glory, righteousness, mercy, faithfulness, goodness,
beauty, and patience. God is love. God is truth."

From a scientific viewpoint:
"Stephen Hawking's God"
"Theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg suggests
that in fact this is not much of a God at all. Weinberg notes that
traditionally the word "God" has meant "an interested personality".
But that is not what Hawking and Lederman mean. Their "god", he says,
is really just "an abstract principle of order and harmony", a set of
mathematical equations. Weinberg questions then why they use the word
"god" at all. He makes the rather profound point that "if language is
to be of any use to us, then we ought to try and preserve the meaning
of words, and 'god' historically has not meant the laws of nature."
The question of just what is "God" has taxed theologians for thousands
of years; what Weinberg reminds us is to be wary of glib definitions."

-------------------------------------

An encyclopedic definition: (and a lengthy discussion on the subject)
"The proper noun God refers to a single ultimate, infinite source of
being in the universe. This is in contrast with the common noun god
(used in lower case), which refers to an immortal supernatural being
with great powers. No undisputed evidence has ever been found for the
existence of God or of gods, but it is not unusual for people to
believe in their existence through the practice of a religion. Even
believers in the existence of particular gods may consider others to
be purely fictional."

-------------------------------------

A humorous viewpoint:
"According to the Hitchhikers Guide, the Babel fish was put forth as
an example for the non-existence of God:

Something that perfect could only exist if there was a god to create
it, so the Babel fish proved there was a god. Proof denies faith
however, and faith is the standard by which we are to know God. Oops,
says God, without faith I have no followers, and disappears in a
theological puff of smoke. (At which point humanity goes on to prove
black is white and gets killed at the next zebra crossing)."

-------------------------------------

"What is God?

God is different things to different people. Many people believe
Jesus is god, or Allah is god, or Buddha is is god or no one is god.
Others believe the sun is god, the Earth is god and everything in the
universe is made up of god. Some believe that there is no god and
some think that they are god.

The planets used to be called gods and so did volcanoes, thunders
storms, rhinos, cows, snakes, goats and a whole bunch of other natural
things. Not much mention has been made however, about the ant god,
the cockroach god, the pea god, the sand god, the bottle top god, the
shoe lace god or the pencil eraser god, why do you think that is?

Then there are the gods of worship, you know, those things that people
spend more time thinking about than their own family, friends,
spirituality or place in life. Things like the television, alcohol,
music, drugs, sex, fashion, money, and and so on. If god is so great
wouldn't you want to give it more priority than everything else?

What about the infinite electricity that flows through everything in
creation or the love that a wanting mother has for her newborn child?

What about humanity, habits, goals, change, time, the here and the
now?

What about the imagination?"

degard-ga,

Here's a tool you might use to get more specific about who YOU think
God is (since there's obviously no definitive answer.) Speaknet has a
very interesting 'Religion Selector' that asks a series of questions
about your thoughts, beliefs, and impressions about spiritual and
religious matters, and then tells you which religions your answers
match closest.

(It's not as gimmicky as it might sound, it's actually quite
informative. And once you're done finding out about yourself, you can
put in other answers to find out who you could have some really good
debates with!)

Good luck!

Who is God? God is that by which all things make enough sense that you
own your life, know yourself to be relevant to your environment, and
make yourself a voting stockholder in the corporation of life.

Trying to find out with your mind who is God is the same as the game
of a child who tryies to move the whole water of the ocean into a
small hole he made in the sand of the beach. That's why noone can
explain you who is God, but you have to find it for yourself (in you)
through love, meditation, praying, paying attention to the fact that
you are conscious.. whatever you feel efficient.

I'm sure that lot of people knows that English can't stand alone it
self and it has 33% something Greek words and 60% Latin words and
other percentage includes other languages. I do not know the root of
the word God. I as a 'Thamizh' or as Tamil in English um zh is a
spcial word in the language Thamizh anyway. Well the thing is when u
look at the word god in Thamizh i mean in the word 'kAdavUl' for
instance, it has a deep meaning. In Thamizh 'kAdavUl' means the one
who has passed everythings not as in travelling or passing a certain
point but as in everything. The term God is there in every languages i
suppose. First of all it's logical that you should understand the fact
that Gods were created by the imagination of human beings in the early
human civilizations. Natural things were prayed as god as well as
animals. There were lot of myths. People prayed cobra to rock. People
then made a figure of the god with the imagination they had and it had
been followed by their generations through thousands of years. There
is this proverb i heard. It's say, " Whoever seen God is not on Earth,
and those who lives on Earth had never seen the God." Infact it's
true. Yes there is things like saints seen God through their
imaginations but as u know God excists in every forms, God could be a
living thing or even a non living thing but you have to understand the
fact that there is only one GOD. If you go on and ask questions like,
" What is God?" Then you are wasting your time, because God is
invicible to those eyes who don't try to seek him with full heart.
Religious volumes (books) vary in differnts because those who written
it meant that. Now don't come up with an arugment saying, " Well Bible
is written by the God himself." I don't mean to dissapoint you but you
can't say that Jesus borned on Earth is true and other are false. As
far as i know from the knowledge i have is that If one religion is
true then so are the others. Scientists may answer more scientifically
maybe stupidly. Just because they are Scientists doesn't mean
everything they say are true or things. They fail lot of experiments
to be succeed on the thing they are doing. There is this Kural written
by Saint Valluvar says,

"What can one possess with education
 Without praying the God"

Oh and there is this kural which says,

"Whatever you hear from whoever it is Nevertheless
   trust it without analyzing it"

Ignore those who says there is no God. They are still blind. Do not
fool urself from asking the same question again. God excists inside
everythings. Term God should mean what 'kAdavUl' means.

                  Thanks for asking this question!

God is love, and is my personal experience when answering this
question. Oops, I meant to say! ... why not ask God?

God is with you right now, all around you and hidden within you.
Loving you!
