I have a G3 iMac running OS X v. 10.1.2. My default browser is
Microsoft IE 5.1. I have a fast connection--DSL, unsure of speed or
whether ADSL or SDSL. For months I have had a regular, recurring
problem with four web mail accounts: Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, and my
college alumni account.

I am able to login in successfully and read mail and access all the
screens to compose messages, but when I hit the respective "send"
buttons, the browser just hangs. This happens most of the time,
although it occasionally works correctly, but I would say 80 to 90
percent of the time I am unable to send messages via these e-mail
accounts. This includes replies to inbox messages and new
compositions. There seems to be no pattern as to when it works and
when it doesn't. Restarting the browser and/or rebooting the machine
doesn't usually resolve the issue, although it does sometimes. I just
never know when it will work.

Please note that when I say the browser "hangs," I mean the browser
doesn't crash but that it waits and waits for the next screen, i.e.
the Sent Message confirmation. For example, the status bar on Hotmail
says from "sending request for /cgi-bin/premail/3285" and then it
just stays there. If I wait long enough, usually a few minutes, I will
get a browser error dialog saying, "Attempt to load 'Accessing URL
[something really long]' failed."

When it does work, it moves through that process almost instantly and
brings up my sent confirmation.

Can anyone find information for me from others who may have had this
problem, and possible solutions? I have searched the Usenet groups and
looked for online help from Apple, but I have never found anything.

Thanks so much.

Thanks for the feedback.... I have installed IE 5.2.2 and am still
having the same problem. I have not yet installed Mozilla, hoping to
avoid that--I use that at work and don't like it as much.

I am able to run Netscape Communicator v. 4.77 via Classic mode
(System 9), but I have a similar problem in this mode too.

Thanks for trying, let me know if you find anything else.

Hi there amweber. I've been unable to turn up anything about your
problem.

May I recommend installing another browser to determine whether it's a
browser issue or something else? I use Mozilla, which I find is very
good indeed. You can get a Mac OS X copy here:

http://www.mozilla.org/releases/

You could also try Chimera:

Good luck,

You could try upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer and
tell us if the problem still persists. You can download the latest
version from :
    - Microsoft.com: Internet Explorer 5.2.2 for Mac OS X
      ( http://microsoft.com/mac/DOWNLOAD/IE/ie5_osx.asp )

Please try it out, and inform us if you still have the same problem.
Thanks,

amweber...

I'm wondering if, perhaps, your internet connection
is dropping out from under you. However, I'm not
familiar with the OS X interface, or what commands
you would need to run that would be equivalent to
the 'ipconfig' command in Windows, which can verify
the status of your connection.
