hi bettymcm,
This file extension is common in internet addresses. CGI (Common
Gateway Interface) involves a method of transferring data from web
pages to scripts running on a web server and back again. You should be
able to open this file with the "Simpletext" application.
I hope this helps |

I opened SimpleText and then tried to open the file and all I got was
gibberish. Am I doing something wrong?

If think the likely explanation of this problem is what my colleague,
(jgarrigu), has commented about below. I doubt changing the extension
of file will help, but try it it anyway. If all the suggestions
posted here fail, I suggest you post another "clarification request"
with details about where and how you got hold of this file. I presume
it was downloaded from an internet site. If you give me the relevant
details, I will look into it for you. I am also a Mac user too!!
If you dont know these details, then let me know what this product is,
and I will try and find out where you can download it again in a
Mac-friendly format.

Before I requested an answer to this problem, I had tried changing the
extension to PDF but that did not work. What I'm trying to download is
a manual for a refrigerator, General Electric model GTS181C. I thought
a big co. like this would generate manuals readable by either a Mac or
a PC. If you can download a Mac version, that would be great.

I have gone to the GE website and have downloaded the manual. The
filename is called "tswww.cgi" and it is 2.9MB in size. Is this the
same .cgi file you are referring to???
On my Mac computer the file has an Acrobat PDF icon, (it has a red
horizontal stripe going through it), which means it can be opened and
read by the Acrobat Reader application. Do you have Acrobat Reader
installed???

Yes, that's the correct file. I tried to open it from Acrobat Reader
4.0 and couldn't do it. I didn't see any red stripe that indicated
PDF, only the .cgi.

yes, that would explain the problem. If the file does not have the
right icon (i.e. with the red stripe) then your computer doesnt
recognise it as a file that can be opened with an application. On my
computer, the refrigerator file is being recognised as a PDF document
and can be opened properly. This file should be readable on PCs and
Macs - the file extension (.cgi) doesnt seem to be the main issue in
this case. There obviously seems to be a reason why you cant open the
file and I can. I would be happy to send you this file via email....
But firstly, can you open other PDF files on your computer??? and do
these other files have the red striped icon on them?? If the answer is
YES then it seems that there is something wrong with the refrigerator
file that you've downloaded. Perhaps you only downloaded part of it
(?).
If the answer is NO, then you may have a problem with the Acrobat
Reader application, and you may have to re-install the program again.
Let me know what you find, and then I'll advise you accordingly.

Yes, I make and open PDFs all the time. If you can send to me by email
in a PDF format, that would solve the immediate problem. My email:
bettymcm@earthlink.net.
