I am looking for present whereabouts (name of owner, address) of a
specific McCarty family silver. This silver was in the possession of
Capt. W. Page McCarty in 1884. Capt. McCarty wrote to E. Hayden
(author of "Virginia Genealogies" on 9 Oct 1884 as follows: "Capt.
Daniel McCarty (1679-1724) . ... his silver which I have is all
emblazoned with the shield and crest of that house (McCarty)and some
of it bears the date 1620. Though the tradition is that he was the
Earl of Clancarty, it is more likely that he was the son of Mount
Cashel, the younger branch of the family as the helmet on the arms is
a knight's and not an earl's and that his epople merely considered him
the Earl after the elder branch became extinct, as represented in
Ireland by the younger branches than the Colonial one." Hayden goes on
to describe this silver which he saw. "I have seen this silver, twelve
tankards, six salt cellars, one tea urn and one sugar dish blazoned
with the arms as above.I do not dubt the descent of this family from
the Clancarthy or Mount Cashel line ... ". W. Page McCarty died a
bachelor in Richmond, Virginia on 25 May 1900 and at that point the
silver disappeared. McCarty did not leave a will but apparently there
was a nephew who lived in the New York City area who MIGHT have taken
the silver. As a genealogist I need the EXACT arms (since there were
so many McCarty septs) in order to have a clue as to the parentage of
Dennis McCarty who was the first of the McCarty line to come to
Virginia from Ireland about 1670 and who left the silver to his son
Capt. Daniel McCarty. I am NOT interested in buying the silver which
would be probably be prohibitively expensive but VERY interested in
photographs showing details of the arms on the silver (as well as
communicating with present owners). |
