Question ID: 116025
Was there ever any video with my favorite dancer of all time, Winston
DeWitt Hemsley, Jr.? He started in the 60's in NYC and appeared in
many Broadway hits:Golden Boy,Joyful Noise,Hallelujah Baby,Hello
Dolly,Purlie,A Chorus Line; He was in a movie:The Pawnbroker. And he
danced in ensemble groupings in the movie The Wiz. He danced in
countless TV specials, was a dancer on the TV show Hullabaloo. But I'm
seeking any video of him dancing on a concert stage. He was in many
concerts with the Fred Benjamin co. Winston was a co-director for that
co.('67-mid-70's). I'm hoping perhaps one of those concerts was
filmed. He also had a night club song & dance act with Alan Weeks
called Tip & Tap. He may be in Las Vegas,NV these days. It's somewhat
of a mystery if he is even alive. The NYC dance community heard that
he died of aids in the 80's. He also was reported as a homicide victim
in Las Vegas,NV on May 9,1989. But curiously, there continues to be a
Winston DeWitt Hemsley, Jr. in Las Vegas. Can anyone unravel a show
business mystery? I will pay $20.00 for anything that leads to video
cassette of concert footage.

Dear bluestreak-ga,

I don't know if any of this information will help, but it may provide
a good starting point for your search.

I did a search of the inter-library loan catalog, Worldcat, and I
found several videos featuring the Fred Benjamin Dance Company. The
two listed below looked promising, and are available at the New York
Public Library's Research Library. You can try contact NYPL directly
212-870-1630 or check to see if your local library can Interlibrary
Loan it for you.

-The Fred Benjamin Dance Company's Twentieth Year Celebration and
Alumni Reunion Video features choreography by Winston Hemsley and may
possibly show footage of past performances. It was recorded in Sept.
1989

-Fred Benjamin Dance Company Video was recorded in Oct. 1978, so I am
not sure if this would be after Ms. Hemsley's stint with the company,
but it may also be worthwhile.

I don't know if you have seen the PBS series Free to Dance, but it
also features Fred Benjamin's Dance Company and presumably may have
older concert footage.

Unfortunately, I don't have much luck with Tip & Tap, or Alan Weeks.

If all else fails, you may want to contact Fred Benjamin directly. He
is currently serving as faculty member at Steps on Broadway 2121 West
Broadway at 74 Street New York, NY 10023. He may have copies of old
concert footage or may know where they can be obtained.

Very good work, cynabun! I will contact the libraries & see if they
have any videos with Winston. Hopefully they will. If so, there is a
chance they will have a duplication service. I feel this is a credible
possibility. I will let you know if I can come up with anything. Thank
you very, very much for your hard research. If I can obtain any
concert video of Hemsley, you will have more that richly earned your
fee.

Hi cynabun. It seems that whoever handles the software, has determined
that this question has been fully answered. It has NOT, yet anyway. I
now have a starting point, as you so pointed out. I must now begin my
further searching & work, but now have a good direction to follow
through on. So I must keep this question open for now. My parameters
require that the answer lead to my acquiring a video of Winston in
concert. I hope this doesn't disappoint you, since I'm very enthused
that you are helping me, and I'm hoping for a happy conclusion. I
don't know what to do now that they have debited my account already.
Have any ideas? Bluestreak

Hello good researcher cynabun,
You don't know what your kind understanding means to me. I
just got off the phone a while ago with the New York Library of the
Performing Arts(at Lincoln Center). I spoke with them at some length.
They do actually have a couple of videos of Winston in their
catalogue. One from '64 & one from '65 from his days in the NY High
School of the Performing Arts. They had another video I covet. They
informed me that they do not have a duplicating service, but she said
that even if they did, they couldn't use them, due to they do not own
any copyrights to the videos. Worse, they couldn't even lend them out
as an inter-library loan item. I was CRUSHED. But what could I do but
be gracious? I am actually surprised that they
had any video on Winston. I'd pay any price to own video of him in
concert from the '68-71 era. I hope you are not discouraged from this
question. I need tons of help & will work with you as generously as I
possibly can. Thank you so much for your kind understanding.

Dear Bluestrak-ga,

I contacted the Library of Congress, however they were unable to
loacte any videos featuring Winston Hemsley in their collections. They
did lead me to www.footage.net that does searches and assist in
providing footage to production professionals. I do not know if you
require this for personal or professional use. If you need this for a
professional project, it may be worth a shot. Since I am not a
production professional, I don't believe that I can conduct the
search.

Hi cynabun,
The purpose of this question is to obtain a video of Hemsley
dancing in concert strictly for my own use. He was the greatest dancer
I ever saw or hope to see, or heard of. I would do a lot to be able to
acquire one.

Bluestreak-ga,

I can only think of two options at this point. One, is to contact
someone like Fred Benjamin directly to find out if he has any footage
that he would be willing to copy and sell to you. Or contact NYPL
again to determine who holds the copyright on the film that they have,
and see if the copyright holder would sell you copy. I checked the
Steps Beyond Broadway website and it appears that Mr. Benjamin is not
teaching this semester, but will return January 5, 2003. As for the
second option, I know that it's been done, but the question becomes
willingness of the copyright holder and cost.

Hi cynabun,
Please forgive me for my lateness getting back to your good
suggestions as I've quite a lot of answering to do. I've yesterday got
back news that Fred Benjamin, while conducting a master jazz class in
Japan, suffered a brain anuerism while teaching. I think that is a
stroke. He's being brought home to Manhattan and will start his care
soon. So this might be an inopportune moment to ask him my questions.
But we are on the right track. In the
meantime, I'm not sure how this system works in some aspects. I assume
you were paid already for my question on Hemsley, since my account was
debited. That's not your fault but I don't even know how they want me
to request a refund, at least for now. Do you know? Also, I happened
to look at your other answers to other people's questions. You are
excellent, cynabun. But I did notice that when you submitted your
answers, there was no link by which to "rate aswer" or "tip
researcher". So the questioners could not rate you. Just thought I
mention that in case that was why you couldn't be rated. You might
want to contact the webmaster to correct those details. bluestreak

That's devasting news about Fred Benjamin! Life certainly can change
in an instant. Thnaks for the heads up on the rating for my other
answers. I'll have to investigate that. I have no clue as to how you
go about getting a refund quite honestly. However, if I find anything
out, I'll let you know.

Have a great holiday.

Hi again, cynabun,
You know what. You've been such a good guy about the refund
thing, that I think I'm gonna just let it pass. It's Christmas and you
did beautiful work in your efforts to help me. I'm sure that you could
find good use for $50. I really do feel that when you submit your
answers, there's probably links that need to go along with each
answer, otherwise the questioner is helpless to respond. And your
answers were quite good. If any of my other questions seems
interesting to you, I have lots that never got answered. Such as June
Taylor,Maggie Black,Martha Lasker, and several former baseball owners.
I really want to thank you so much for all your superior searches. I
guess we're all learning this new service together. My best season's
regards to you & your family. bluestreak

Hi again cynabun. I really hate having to do this, but I can't accept
your findings at this time as having answered the question. I hope to
soon however. My requirement for a sucessful answer hinged on it
leading me to acquiring a video of Winston Hemsley in concert. And I
am hopful I can do that. First I must call up that NYC Library for the
Performing Arts and inquire if Mr. Hemsley even appears on either
video. Hopefully he does. Secondly, I must ask if they have a
duplicating service. Hopefully, they do. If so, then your excellent
lead will be a sucessful answer. But we're not there yet. I MUST at
this time, request a refund on my question. You don't know how much I
hate having to do this. But if all goes well, it will be temporary.
A word of caution. It would be simpler if, in the
future, you were to post your findings as a comment, asking the
questioner if he requires more information, before submiting your
findings as a sucessful answer. Just a thought. Please be patient with
me. I want very much to work with you on this question to a sucessful
conclusion and others as well in the future, because you are a
wonderful researcher. Bluestreak
