salem,
This is a very interesting question and one that I am delighted to
tackle, since I have taken a personal interest in it as well, and have
previously done a fair amount of research and reading on the subject.
I'm sure that the reason that the History Channel has been showing
"The Men Who Killed Kennedy" so frequently is that they are getting
decent viewership numbers for
"The Men Who Killed Kennedy" (1995 and 1988, A & E Entertainment,
Color VHS Video), because JFK's Assassination seems to be a subject
which holds a fascination for a large number of Americans.

Lists of witnesses and other sources used in the making of these
documentaries can be found in the Internet Movie Database (IMDb)
entries for these videos:

According to Laser Scans DVD Guide:
"Nigel Turner's epic History Channel documentary, on two discs,
preceded and probably informed Oliver Stone's JFK. This film is
equally disturbing, but makes much more sense. (1988) CM"

To me, one of the most amazing things these days is that, with all the
advances in technology, and all the additional information that has
been collected since the JFK assassination, so many Americans STILL
seem to believe that Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK, and that the Warren
Commission's Report was true.
In fact, anyone who expends a little effort on research will find an
overwhelming abundance of EXTREMELY convincing evidence to the
contrary.
One of the things that really irks me is all of the snide comments
that are still made, to this day, about Oliver Stone being a so-called
"conspiracy theorist". All Mr. Stone did was make a movie based on a
book by Jim Garrison, the New Orleans District Attorney:
"On the Trail of the Assassins", by Jim Garrison (Warner Books,
February 1992)
"An account of Jim Garrison's attempt to solve the Kennedy
assassination describes how Garrison was ridiculed by the press,
denounced by the FBI, and harrassed by the CIA because of his
allegations that the government was involved in Kennedy's death."

In my opinion, one of the BEST sources of information on the forensic
evidence of the JFK assassination is the first chapter (comprising 1/4
of the book) of Cyril Wecht's "Cause of Death" (Onyx Books, November
1994). Dr. Wecht also appears in Nigel Turner's "The Men Who Killed
Kennedy".
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451181417
The following excerpts were taken from my copy of "Cause of Death".
The Author's Biography:
"Cyril Wecht, MD, JD, is widely recognized as one of America's leading
forensic pathologists. A former president of both the American Academy
of Forensic Sciences and the American College of Legal Medicine, he
has performed over 12,000 autopsies and reviewed another 25,000. His
medical-legal expertise and uncanny ability to uncover new evidence
have placed him in the middle of many of the nation's most
controversial cases."
I *highly* recommend this book to anyone wishing to better understand
the true circumstances surrounding the death of President Kennedy.
From famous Attorney F. Lee Bailey's "Foreward" to "Cause of Death":
"Because of the many mistakes and aberrations made in the aftermath of
that murder, the odds are overwhelming that the truth will never be
known. What is known is that the conclusions of the Warren Commission
have completely lost the confidences of the forensic scientists of
this world
I still believe that America and the world would be well-served if
more truth could be known about this killing. Impossible though it may
be at this date to discover who exactly pulled the many strings which
so effectively buried the truth in the JFK assassination, the single
most important spearhead of challenge has been Cyril Wecht."
"Once Cyril shows you the evidence and explains the laws of medicine
and science, there can be no doubt that the Warren Commission's
finding that there was only one gunman and only three bullets is
completely absurd," says Mr. Bailey. "Cyril is no wild conspiracy
theorist who dreams up scenarios of how President was shot and by
whom. Instead, he deals only with the medical and scientific
evidence."
According to Dr. Wecht, who spent "August 24-25, 1972 at the National
Archives in Washington, DC, reviewing every single piece of physical
evidence they told me was in their possession":
"...it was a botched autopsy, a terrible piece of medicolegal
investigation
the men chosen for the task were inexperienced military
pathologists who knew nothing of homicide investigations... the
pathologists were specifically told by federal agents and high-ranking
military officials [including Vice Admiral George G. Burkley, the
White House Physician] in the room not to dissect the bullet wound in
President Kennedy's back...
Similarly, it was amazing that the pathologists never dissected
President Kennedy's brain to examine the gunshot wounds...
Extraordinary. The federal government had lost the brain of President
Kennedy [sometime before 1966]."
In regard to the single "magic bullet" which, according to the Warren
Commission, supposedly went through Governor John Connally after
hitting President Kennedy in the upper back, at a downward angle, and
exiting his neck in the front, Dr. Wecht says: "For this same bullet
then to have struck Governor Connally in the right part of his back
behind the armpit, the bullet would have had to make a complete stop
in midair
take an acute turn to the right for 18 inches, stop again,
and turn downward before entering Connally's back behind the right
armpit... What absolute nonsense."
Dr. Wecht goes on to explain that the "magic bullet" itself weighs
much more than an identical unfired bullet, minus the total weight of
the bullet fragments recovered from Governor Connally, could possibly
weigh.
I encourage you to check out from a library or purchase a copy of Dr.
Wecht's book "Cause of Death", to read the complete text of his
analysis of the evidence from the JFK assassination.
A couple of other excellent sources which analyze the evidence from
the Kennedy Assassination:
"Murder in Dealey Plaza: What We Know Now that We Didn't Know Then"
by James H. Fetzer, Editor (Open Court Publishing Company, August
2000)
"In its publisher's words, on the basis of the findings presented in
MURDER IN DEALEY PLAZA, 'it is possible to say with moral certainty
and with considerable scientific authority that the murder of
President Kennedy was committed by a meticulously executed conspiracy
which was then obscured by an extensive cover-up'...
The evidence presented in this volume demonstrates beyond reasonable
doubt:
- that JFK was hit at least four times ...
- that the wound to his throat was caused by a shot that penetrated
the limousine windshield, which was subsequently destroyed and
replaced by a substitute windshield...
- that ... no bullet passed through the President and hit the
Governor, ...
- that ... an absolute minimum of six shots had to have been fired
during the assassination, where the total was more likely eight, nine,
or even ten...
- that the massive blow-out to the back of the head was concealed by
imposing a 'patch' to the right lateral cranial X-ray...
- that the brain shown in diagrams and photographs in the National
Archives cannot be the brain of John Fitzgerald Kennedy...
- that two brain examinations were conducted, the first of which was
with the President's brain, the second with a substitute...
- that the photographs were subsequently altered and reshot in various
ways to conceal evidence of the cause of death...
- that the extant 'Zapruder film' has been massively edited to remove
evidence of the actual cause of death, including the limousine having
been brought to a halt in order to insure that the target would be
killed." (Amazon.com Book Description)

than just the excerpts shown above, and I encourage you to take a

"The Last Investigation", by Gaeton Fonzi (Thunder's Mouth Press,
November 1993)
"A laying of tombstones on 1964's Warren Commission Report and 1979's
House Assassinations Committee report; by a former senior editor of
Philadelphia magazine. Fonzi early found the Warren Report dependent
almost entirely on doctored intelligence from the CIA and biased
toward proving Oswald the lone gunman." (Kirkus Reviews)

A good JFK Assassination resource which offers no analysis, but is
merely a collection of references to written and human references:
"November 22, 1963", by William E. Scott, Cyril H. Wecht, University
Press of America (March 18, 1999)
"A Reference Guide to the JFK Assassination provides an up-to-date
scholarly reference to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
It identifies over six hundred medical and ballistics experts, law
enforcement and government officials involved in the event and its
aftermath. It also includes an extensive bibliography listing over
2,300 books, magazine and journal articles, academic papers,
government publications, and audio-visual sources divided into 18
separate categories. The nature of this book makes it an excellent
resource for both the experienced researcher and any interested
citizen." (Amazon.com Book Description)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0761813365
In my personal opinion (and remember, you asked for it!), one of the
WORST places you could go for information on the JFK assassination is
"Case Closed: Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK", by
Gerald L. Posner (Random House Value Publishing, November 1995)
"Gerald Posner's, Case Closed, is the todays modern day version of the
Warren Commission. Look only at the facts, photos, and testimony that
will point to a lone killer, most notably, Lee Oswald. Ignore
important testimony, important photos, and important facts..."
(September 4, 2002 review by reader "commish")
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517164469
I would echo this reader's opinion: This book seems to me merely a
repackaged regurgitation of the Warren Commission's report, so many
elements of which have been thoroughly scientifically contradicted at
this point, that this book is in my opinion a ludicrous attempt to
persuade the public to ignore that evidence. Posner seems to believe
that if Garrison's attempt to prosecute Clay Shaw was not supported by
real evidence, then it proves that everything else Garrison said was a
lie. Whether Clay Shaw was guilty or innocent of the charges put forth
by Garrison is immaterial to the veracity of the main evidence in the
JFK case.
I am not the only one who holds this opinion.
Professor David R. Wrone of the University of Wisconsin, Stevens
Point, writes in "Review of Gerald Posner, Case Closed" (Journal of
Southern History 6, February 1995, pp. 186-188):
"...his book is so theory driven, so rife with speculation, and so
frequently unable to conform his text with the factual content in his
sources that it stands as one of the stellar instances of
irresponsible publishing on the subject. Massive numbers of factual
errors suffuse the book...

"Case Distorted: Posner, Connick, and the New York Times", by Bill
Davy, Probe (March-April, 1996 issue, Vol. 3 No. 3)
"Posner's book, Case Closed, is rife with contradictions, sloppy
research, and distortions. What is surprising is that the Times found
all of this newsworthy. The contradictions found in the files of the
Warren Commission and the House Select Committee on Assassinations
(HSCA) would fill volumes."
