I want to able to do data backups on my cdrw drive. More
specifically, I want to be able to format CDs so I can use them
to do data backups.

Some background: I used to do data backups ok with Win
98, Argentum Backup, and Roxio CD Creater, which I used for the
single purpose of reformatting old CDs.

I then bought an XP machine and swapped both my old C: drive
and the CDRW drive into it.

When I click on the Roxio program nothing happens. This might be
because it can't find the CDRW drive in its new location or because
CD Creater 5.x needs an XP driver (or both). I have downloaded the
XP driver from the Roxio website but when I click on it it doesn't
install, which is a head-scratcher. I have tried moving it to the
directory containing CD Creator but it plays dead there too.
Unfortunately I cannot find the original disk the Roxio SW came on
so I can't try reinstalling it on my new C: drive.

The optimal solution is figure out how get my copy of Roxio CD
Creator running well enough to format my disks.

A second solution is to find some shareware program that does data
CD formatting. There are lots of programs out there to support
music CDs but I have not yet found one that does data structures.
Possibly a standards thing. XP itself comes with a program that
erases disks and their data structures but leaves them unusable
until some other program copies the structures back on. I have
tried deleting the files on my old CDs by hand, to free up space
for new backups, but they are read-only and I don't seem to be
able to change that attribute. When I try to uncheck the read-only
box in 'properties' I get the error message 'an error occurred
applying attributes to file. Access denied'. What's with that?

A third solution is to buy on old copy of CD Creator and install
that, but I am leery of the possibility that Roxio's supposed XP
driver won't work there either.

A fourth is to pay Roxio $80 to buy a new copy of their
XP-compatible program. I really don't want to do this, but
I have to be able to do backups.

Hi fhapgood!!

I have a "XP machine" too, and I had several troubles with Easy CD
Creator 5 Platinum. The only solution is to upgrade to the real last
version of Easy Cd Creator.
This is the version 5.3.2, and you can download the upgrade to fix
troubles with Windows XP systems here (please read carefully the
instructions):
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_plat_53_updt.html

First of all you must register free at Roxio website to acquire a
Login name and a password to be able to download from this pages:
https://www.roxio.com/en/jhtml/registration/reg.jhtml?referer=&

Please visit the following pages at Roxio website for more information
related to this upgrade:
"Easy CD Creator 5.x.x Software Updates":
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_software_updatesv5.jhtml

"Knowledgebase Articles":
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/kb_articles.html

I recommend you to uninstall and then reinstall Easy Cd Creator from
your PC.
See this "Easy CD Creator Support Notes":
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ask/010613-000014.html

And "Easy CD Creator® 5.0x Platinum and Windows® XP":
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_xpFAQecdcv5p.html

Finally here is a good start for more info:
"Easy Cd Creator Support":
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_index.jhtml

You must know that the Easy Cd Creator includes the Direct CD program
to manage CDRW (format, unformat, etc.). For more info related visit:
"DirectCD Frequently Asked Questions"
http://www.roxio.com/en/products/ecdc/dcdfaqs.jhtml

To download the UDF-Reader look for it at the bottom of this page:
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_software_updatesv4.jhtml

---------------------------------------------

That´s all for the Easy Cd Creator solution, but may be you still have
troubles with this software, so I can recommend you a very good option
(this is the software that I use in my PC): NERO BURNING ROM; you can
find it at its homepage:
http://www.ahead.de/en/index.html#c1022860657460

It cost U$S49, and you can download a full-featured demo, that will
work until the end of December 2002, from here:
http://www.ahead.de/en/content/download.html#download

To manage CDRW with this soft you must dowload and install InCD:
http://www.ahead.de/en/content/c1004534911820.html#c1004534911820

Download InCD from here:
ftp://ftp.us.nero.com/InCD3.51.61UP.exe

Remember that you must complete uninstall Easy CD Creator to use Nero
in your PC and viceversa, you must uninstall Nero to use Easy CD
Creator. In other words you must have only ONE CD-burning software
installed in your PC.

I answer this question with my own knowledge and a deep navigation of
the Roxio website.

I hope this helps you. If you need some clarification or need some
help with dead links please post a request of clarification, I will be
glad to answer you.

Best Regards and good luck.

Man, what a swamp. I looked at the twisty path you laid out for
resurrecting Roxio (by the way, you missed that I have mislaid
the original Roxio CD, which means that I cannot reinstall the
software. I can buy it though -- the older version is for sale
cheap.) and decided to try Ahead's Nero first. When I tried to
install it
I got the error message "Nero - Burning ROM could not be found".
Ahead's help files on the program didn't mention getting this
error message during a naive installation. It does say "When updating
Nero the error message appears: (zero) can not be found or
NERO-BURNING ROM 4.0 COULD NOT BE FOUND" and then explains what
the message means:

"The path to Nero.exe has been removed from the
registration or is wrong. This path has to be
corrected: Please open the registration file and
change to the following key or, if applicable,
     create it. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
paths\nero.exe
     Enter the correct path there."

None of that seems to make any sense in the context of a new
installation. Or am I misreading??

When I tried to lay out this story in a message to the Nero help
desk the server ate my post -- at least I got a flurry of error
messages back when I hit 'send'. What a headache.

I don't know if all this rings any bells for you or not. Am
I right in thinking that the explanation given of the error message
I got probably isn't helpful??

Hello fhapgood!!

I am really sorry about your troubles with Nero installation.
You are right this kind of error has no sense in a first installation
context.
So I will going with guessings, so please excuse me for the
trivialities that I can say.
Are you sure that you are trying to install Nero before the
installation of InCD? The Nero installer is the file Nero55917.exe :
ftp://ftp.us.nero.com/Nero55917.exe

Or may be you have been prompted to update Nero for the installer by
mistake. If the installer give you the option of Quit Nero from your
PC use this option and then install it; sometimes this work with this
kind of troubles. And I ask you, are you sure that your new PC never
had Nero installed?

Another possibility is that the installer is corrupted, in this case
you must download it again.

If nothing of this work, please post a new request of clarification,
and I will try to find you information for another software.

www.ahead.de has a program called nero burning rom that should be able
to do what you want. it comes with a 30 day trial.

I'm going to second Funkywizard's recommendation of Ahead Software's
Nero Burning ROM suite.

The full version of this was bundled with my TDK veloCD, and it's not
only completely user friendly, it's totally idiot-proof - which was a
great blessing for me!
