Hi there,

Using a search operator, AltaVista can still search for image
filenames, however Google does it better.

AltaVista
---------

image:keyword

image:help.gif (23,959 results)
http://au.altavista.com/image/results?q=image%3Ahelp.gif&ipht=1&igrph=1&ibb=1&iclr=1&ibw=1&mmW=1&micat=1&qbmode=1&avkw=qtrp

It isn't perfect, as some results might qualify by having help as a
directory name, such as website/help/yellow.gif

Google
------

inurl:keyword

inurl:help.gif (18,500 results)
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=inurl%3Ahelp.gif

Less results stated, but I trust Google's count more than Altavista's.

These commands only work within the image search box. I tried to find
kotspacer.gif and neither search engine found it. No search engine
claims to have indexed the entire web, but these are the best two for
your purposes, with large indexes and a useful search operator.

Best wishes,

thanks for your reply. i did not know using the operators image: and
inurl: for both engines would help the results.

however, i'm still confused on why both would yield no results for
kotspacer.gif. i'm certain at least 10 sites contain that image. of
course, it's because i've designed and marked them up.

as i mentioned in my original post, altavista did show the results
until a few months ago.

could it be that the engines are now ignoring any graphic containing
the word spacer?

thanks for the help,

mark

I'm guessing the reason is more likely to be that they don't index
images under a certain size. Browsing through an advanced Google Image
search for spacer.gif, after selecting icon size (the smallest):

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&imgsz=icon&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=+inurl%3Aspacer+gif&btnG=Google+Search

I found nothing smaller that 10 pixels in height and width, ie nothing
of 5x5 or 7x8 etc.

Google's Image Search FAQ
-------------------------

An image I know is online wasn't found when I did my search. Why?

You can search more than 390 million images on the Web with Google's
Image Search. However, there are many more images on the Internet that
Google has not yet added to its index. Google is working to crawl more
images to increase the quality and quantity of images returned when
you search, so it's likely we will add the image you're looking for in
the near future.
