Abstract:A pcocedure for screening flowsheet alternatives and
establishing targets for batch processing, primarily forsingle product
plants, is described, The procedure begins with the best continuous
flowsheet. Batch flowsheets are generated by replacing continuous
units by batch equipment and also by merging tasks into a single batch
unit. The procedure points out the role of economy of scale in the
economics of the process and the decision between a batch and a
continuous process and also among all of the batch flowsheets that can
be made. The manufacture of butadiene sulfone from butadiene and
sulfur dioxide is discussed as an example.

Thanks for your comments.It seems like to email to Professor Malone is
the last way.I know that I will probably have to pay for a copy. I
even try to use library coporation.But it take too much time and
expensive(about US40~50).May I have other ways to get this paper?....I

Firstly, you will probably have to pay for a copy of this article to
an agent authorized to make a copy. Assuming you already knew that, I
took a look around to see if I could find a quick online copy of the
article through the following resources :

ScienceDirect.com - Provide PDFs of articles from AIChE journal.
Unfortunately they don't go back to 1985. (Requires a fee to download)
ingenta.com - will scan in an article from their collection and
fax/email it to you. Unfortunately AIChE isn't one of the journals
they have.
aiche.org - will post you a copy of the journal (but they insist on
putting it on top quality paper and charge a fortune for the
privilige).
I also checked the local collegiate libraries (Boston College, UMass
and MIT) but didn't come up with anything (surprising given that the
main author is at UMass and MIT is one of the top ChemEng departments
in the country).

I figured I'd post the stuff I'd tried anyway in case another
researcher gave the question a go (save them checking where I tried).
If all else fails (or no researcher answers the question for you), you
might want to ask Prof. Malone himself for a copy. His website is at :

He'd probably be pleased to help you and could likely find a cheaper
solution than the AIChE website. (Sometimes professors have a version
of their paper that is different enough to avoid copyright
restrictions that they can distribute freely).
