Hello monreale-ga,

I have found some information on Max Roach but I don’t know if it’s
enough for you to consider it an acceptable answer. I have one source
that gives the name of the high school he graduated from and the year
he graduated. I haven’t been able to find the address of the school
yet. I have another source that says the school was closed in the
early 1970’s.

If this information would be an acceptable answer, let me know and
I’ll post it as the answer.

Hi googlenut,

If possible., I'd like the address of the school, even though it may have closed.

Hello monreale-ga,

I was able to come up with some information.

At the website of African American Publications, they state that Max
Roach graduated “from Boys High School with full honors in 1942”

At Brooklyn On Line (http://www.brooklynonline.com/bol/neighborhoods/bs/memories/boys.high.xhtml),
they say that “In the early 1970s, the school was closed and the
building declared a National Landmark and reverted to other city
uses”, referring to Boys High School in the Bedford Stuyvesant
district of Brooklyn.

I found two sources that give the address of Boys High School as 832
Marcy Avenue:

Our Time Press
http://www.ourtimepress.com/24thAnnualBrownstonersofBedStuyHouseTourisSetfor.htm

Bey’s Contracting
http://www.beyscontracting.com/oldboys.htm

According to Yahoo Maps, the full address is

832 Marcy Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11216-1526

The actual date of Roach’s graduation is in question. According to
Africana.com, he graduated in 1941
(http://www.africana.com/Articles/tt_895.htm):

“Max Roach was born Maxwell Lemuel Roach and grew up in Brooklyn, New
York. At the age of 10, he began playing the drums in gospel music
groups. He graduated from high school in 1941 and in the early 1950s
studied at the Manhattan School of Music.”

I hope you have found this information helpful. Please ask for
clarification if you would like further information:

Good luck with your research,
