The last known address I have for him is as a general manager of the
Miramonte Resort in Palm Springs California, in 1997.

I found something taking him being alive up until May of 1998. He's
not listed in the Social Security Death Index though. Is it possible
he went by another name or that the spelling is incorrect?

Hi aurora2112,

Researching your question involved old fashioned telephone research in
addition to Internet searching. I have found the information you seek,
but, because of Terms of Service restrictions, cannot share it with
you in its entirety. However, I think I can give you enough to satisfy
your curiosity and point you in the right direction if you wish
follow-up information.

Ladislav Brank was born January 24, 1949 and died in October of 1998
(not 1999 as erroneously reported elsewhere). This information can be
found in the Social Security Death Index. The reason he was not found
in that database by others who were looking is that he is listed there
as simply L Brank. You can look at this listing yourself by going to
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

Once there, enter "Brank" for last name and "L" for first name.

I found a contact at the Miramonte Resort in Indian Wells, CA whom,
because she was associated with Mr. Brank in a business context, I
believe acceptable within the Researcher guidlelines to identify: her
name is Eleanor Tuttle and she is the Miramonte's Catering Manager,
and she worked with Mr. Brank in 1998. In my conversation with Ms.
Tuttle, I learned that Mr. Brank had returned to Chicago (to take a
job, she believed, with Embassy Suites) where he died of a heart
attack while taking a walk. There was no crime, violence, or suicide
involved according to her. You can reach this contact through the 800
phone number on the Miramonte website at
http://www.miramonte-resort.com/

Perhaps more interestingly, I was able to find a relative of Mr. Brank
living in Evanston. This person, being wary of a stranger inquiring
about a personal matter over the telephone, was not willing to give
any details of Mr. Brank's death, but did tell me that there "was no
obituary" (which I believe after much fruitless online searching).
This source was unwilling to divulge any further details unless I
would provide a legitimate reason for asking. Not being in possession
of your motivation for inquiring, and not wishing to create any
potential problems for my employer, I simply stated that I worked for
an Internet research service and was asking the questions on behalf of
someone I did not personally know. This Illinois source told me that
they would be willing to answer further questions about Mr. Brank, but
only if the person inquiring called personally and stated their
reasons for asking.

Now, as you probably know, I am not permitted by GA policy to provide
that source's name or other personal information such as telephone
number. I think it legitimate, however, to tell you that I found them
through an online telephone directory:
http://www.switchboard.com/

Here's a little additional background on Ladislav Brank:

"From the city to the desert, Ladislav Brank brings with him more than
20 years of hotel management experience to Miramonte Resort.
Working at such prestigious properties as The Whitehall and
Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Chicago, The Mark Hopkins in San Francisco and
The Bostonian Hotel in downtown Boston, Brank has kept the 226 room,
luxury resort in Indian Wells on a fast track. Miramonte Resort is
owned by Marcus Hotels & Resorts. "

That quote is from the Inland Empire Business Journal which referred
to Mr. Brank as "Ladi".
http://www.busjournal.com/content/archives/nov97/whoswho_hosp.html

So, that's it. He died in October, 1998 of a heart attack in Chicago
where he was then working. I regret that I cannot share all the
details I unearthed, but trust that the information I've provided here
will allow you to easily fill in any gaps for yourself.

If you have any further questions about this answer, please post a
Request for Clarification before rating it, and I'll get right back to
you.

Thanks for your question,

I tried searching the Palm Springs, CA, newspaper's online archives
and the Chicago and Evanston newspapers' online archives, but I could
not find an obituary for Brank. The only mention of his death that I
found was from this 2000 issue of KIT ("Keep In Touch"),the newsletter
of Evanston High School graduates. Brank is briefly noted in the "In
Memory" section for 1960s' graduates, but the only information is that
he died in October 1999:

Sorry I was not able to find enough comprehensive information to
answer your question.

Regards and best of luck with your search,

Do you happen to know for sure where the death occurred? The problem
is that his job as a general manager for hotels might have required
him to move occasionally. You can assume that the death occurred in
California but it is also possible if he traveled, that the death
could have occurred in a foreign country.

The Miramonte Resort in Indian Springs, CA where he worked has a
website: www.miramonteresort.com--call or write them or e-mail them
to inquire if they know or heard anything about the death.

The FALL 2000 issue (page 12) of the newsletter that mentioned his
death occurring in Oct. 1999 is:

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL
1600 DODGE AVE.
EVANSTON, IL 60204-3494

Write them and ask them if they happen to remember the name of the
person who reported the information about Ladislav Brank's
death--maybe they can remember a mention (or have a note about it in
their files) about where the death occurred.

Another place mentioned that he was also known as "LADI" BRANK.

If all else fails, order the death certificate from the State of
California for about $10 (www.vitalchek.com, then click on California
to connect to the official California site).

If what the lady says is true about him having died in Chicago, then
you can order the death certificate from the State Of Illinois very
inexpensively to get the information you seek (www.vitalchek.com and
then click on a link for Illinois to get to the official Illinois
site). Problem is that the death index does not say specifically say
what state he died in (they usually are more accurate in providing
that information, but I guess they are only human and they do have
millions of records to process), so if you first want confirmation
that he died in Chicago you could visit your local Social Security
Office and ask the clerk politely to look up the city/county where he
died.

SINCERELY,
4keith-ga
