I am now the responsible for the quality of the services in my
company. Our services are courses. I would like to go beyond the
normal "average-based" quality statitics, as I need not only to have a
good quality average, but also to avoid all the situations in which
quality problems are above a certain limit. What is the best way to
implement that? Is there any use of other statistical moments, such
as the standard deviation or variance?

Hello eaar-ga,

Congratulations on assuming your responsibilities for evaluating the
quality of your training products. You have raised a problem that is
frequently discussed in the training industry – how to go beyond smile
sheets. These are the “average based” quality statistics used by
almost all trainers. They give you feedback about how the participant
felt at the completion of your program, but it’s difficult to derive
any meaningful information from these about the usefulness of what was
learned and the employee’s improved performance on the job.

Of course, you’re not the first manager to be confronted with this
problem. You can find lots of books, articles, Web sites and
organizations that can help you with developing better evaluation
methods for your training products. To help you get started, I’ve
grouped the information into specific advice on evaluating training
programs followed by general resources for training and development
professionals.

I believe you will find what you need but please don’t hesitate to ask
for further clarification. Wishing you well in developing improved
evaluation methods for your products.
