I have a stand alone computer with Windows Me installed & ICS enabled,
though it's not being used. Following a knowledge base article, I
removed IE 6.0 from Control panel "Add Remove" programs. It asked me
to restart the computer. After restart , it showed up usual "Enter
your Microsoft Network Username/Pwd" dialog box. If I click "OK" or
"Cancel", the windows "Task bar & Startup menu" (at the bottom of the
screen) momentarily shows up & then nothing happens! Now tis happens
everytime I start my computer. I can't get in to any
programs/application.

Have you tried starting Windows ME in Safe Mode? This is best if you
do not rely on resources on any networks that your computer may be
connected to.

When you switch on the computer, hold down F8 as it starts booting
into Windows (after the BIOS jibberish screen). Using your keyboard's
up and down arrow keys, select "Safe Mode" and press enter. It may
take a while to boot into Safe Mode, because it checks its files and
chooses to use only the ones that are necessary to get into Windows.
It also uses the VGA resolution of your screen, so Safe Mode is by no
means pretty, and you probably won't be able to do much in the way of
printing or networking.

If you successfully get into Windows ME Safe Mode, then I suggest that
you use this opportunity to back up your important documents and
files. Zip drives and CD burners may be inoperable in Safe Mode, and
floppy disks too small, so the only way to do this may be to make a
new folder on your hard drive (in the root of this drive, i.e.
C:\backup) and copy the documents here. That way, if something goes
even more hideously wrong, and you need to reinstall Windows, then at
least you'll still have the important stuff.

As for actually fixing the error you are having, I can't really help
you, because, not only have I never uninstalled a version of Internet
Explorer, but I have never used Windows Me, and never plan to! I have
heard very bad things about the stability of that Operating System,
and jumped directly from Windows 98SE directly to Windows XP.

If you want help reinstalling Windows, though, I can help you. I've
done it hundreds of times.

I tried this in safe mode too, but to no avail. In safe mode, it
opens the "Troubleshooting help" windows & nothing else. When you
close that window, there is nothing else on screen, no windows key
will work.

Finally, I did system restore from the help window & it did the trick.
But still, I'm stuck with IE 6 !!!

This sounds alot like a typical IE crash especially if you come up
with a "blank" desktop.

I dealt with alot of these in Windows 95 and some on 98.

First with the "login box"
If you installed Client for Microsoft Networks this will pop up when
you reboot. You can enter a username and password or just hit enter
or OK and it should be the last time you see it pop up (as long as you
never entered a username and password).

As far as the crash goes.
First try this.
Repair IE before unistalling.
You should get a 3 option box when trying to uninstall IE from
Add/Remove programs.
The three Options will be:
Repair
Restore
Remove(?)

First try Repair, this will fix any easy errors with IE.
Also do not try to Remove IE totally, if you want to get rid of IE6
try the option to "Restore previous configuration"

This will take you to the previous version of IE you had installed.
Most likely IE 5.5.

If you experience a crash again try these steps from the Microsoft KB
article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;225040

If You Can View the Desktop
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5
and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove.
Click Repair Internet Explorer, click OK, and then click Yes when you
are prompted to repair the installation.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

If Windows Displays a Blank Desktop
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to start Task Manager (Taskman.exe), click Run
Application on the File menu, and then type control appwiz.cpl.
Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, and then click
Add/Remove.
Click Repair Internet Explorer, click OK, and then click Yes.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

****FYI If you reinstalled Windows ME over itself you may have
problems getting this done.

Dear onlooker75-ga,
For all such problems the best solution is:
Insert Startup Disk, and start your computer (1)
Choose to boot with CDROM support and Insert windows Me CD. Run
setup.exe file from the CD. This file sometimes may be located in some
folder in your CD. I presume you know DOS commands like DIR, CD etc.

(1) If you do not have startup disk, use another computer to create
one or get te startup files from te web.
Installing windows like this won't do any harm to your programs and
personal files. Be sure to install to the same directory where Windows
was previously installed (usually C:\Windows)
Thank you.
