Hello tinkerbell58-ga,

I believe the best source for a great deal of information about
homelessness in Great Britain would be Homelesspages.org
(http://www.homelesspages.org.uk/index.html).

They state that at the website that,

“Homeless Pages is a comprehensive guide to publications and
information about homelessness in the UK. More than a bibliography, it
provides an introduction to homelessness, plus a database of
resources, including reports, directories, websites, online articles
and training courses. Homeless Pages is researched and published by
Resource Information Service.”

This website includes numerous reports, links to websites and
articles, etc. that are related to homelessness in the United Kingdom
(UK).

Most resources I found were for all of the UK, including Northern
Ireland. I hope that this is acceptable.

A point I should make is that in the UK, they refer to those that
sleep on the streets as “rough sleepers”. Of course, if you are in
the UK, then you probably already know that. Since I am in the United
States, this was new to me.

Through Homelesspages.org, I found links to several very informative
reports on the website of the “Office of the Deputy Prime Minister”:

“Looking For Change: The Role and Impact of Begging on the Lives of
People Who Beg” (http://www.housing.odpm.gov.uk/information/rough/begging/index.htm)

“A report about begging in relation to drugs and alcohol and
homelessness. Based on research carried out in Manchester, Bristol,
Leeds, London and Brighton, involving people who beg, the public,
police officers and hostel and day centre staff.”

“More than a Roof: A Report into Tackling Homelessness”

“A report, based on the Homelessness Act 2002, proposing a new
approach to tackling homelessness in the UK.”

“Housing Statistics, Homelessness”
http://www.housing.odpm.gov.uk/statistics/publicat/homelessness/index.htm

Unfortunately, these reports do not include pictures.

I found some other sources that do include pictures.

The website of St. Mungo’s, which describes itself as a homelessness
agency and housing association, includes a page of “Facts about
homeless people” (http://www.mungos.org/facts.shtml). They state the
following:

“We know, for instance, that over 1,000 people sleep rough each night
on the streets of Britain, more than 300 of them in inner London (the
figure for this in 1949 was just six people). We also know that about
one in ten are woman, and that one in six are under 25 and one in 14
over 60.”

This website does include some pictures.

I found several BBC articles that include pictures:

“Sharp fall in rough sleeper numbers”, Monday, 3 December, 2001
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/1688651.stm).

This article includes the following statistics on homelessness:

“550 people now sleep rough
In 1998 2,000 slept rough
400,000 single people homeless
Record numbers in B&B
95% unemployment among ex-homeless”

“Rough sleepers face £500 fine”, Friday, 27 September, 2002,
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2284776.stm)

This article includes the following statistics on homelessness:

“Official rough sleeper figures, June 2002
London: 328
Westminster: 169
Camden: 28
Lambeth: 12 “

“Drive to cut homelessness”, Wednesday, 15 December
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/563566.stm)

“Fall in numbers sleeping rough”, Saturday, 4 August, 2001
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1472946.stm)

For more pictures you may want to try a Google Image search (click on
the “Images” tab just above the search input box). A search on the
terms “sleeping rough” and “rough sleepers” came up with a few useful
pictures.

I hope you have found this information helpful. Please ask for
clarification if you need more information.

Good luck,
