I need your assistance configuring a new Win2k machine to talk to my
HP
JetDirect ExPlus on my simple home computer network. My home network
connects to the internet through a Linksys router then to a Intel hub
which connects the JetDirect (cabled to an Epson injet printer,) a
WIN98 machine and a Win2k machine. The Win2k machine is new, it
replaces a Win98 machine which had no difficulties using the
JetDirect.

To prepare the Win2K machine to talk with the JetDirect, I've
downloaded HP's Download Manager, which went out found the Jetdirect
and told me it had the most current firmware. I then downloaded the
newest version of JetAdmin which is “Web JetAdmin” and the fun began.
With my previous machine, I was able to use the HP JetAdmin wizard and
everything was configured for me, with the latest Web Jet Admin, the
wizard has disappeared and I'm confronted with multiple pages of
options, most of which I don't understand.

The Web JetAdmin does find the Jet Direct and the network traffic
light blinks on the Jet Direct each time it is accessed. The Web Jet
Admin gives me no errors for TCP/IP, but nothing happens when I try to
Print a test page using this protocol. I've also tried using IPX
protocol and the Web Jet Admin program indicates that the print
spooler is not found.

My other network machine, the Win98 computer, has no difficulty
accessing and printing through the JetDirect. How should I configure
the Win2000 machine?

I've found that getting the JetDirect to work can be a pain. Since
the Download Manager was able to find the printer an get the firmware
version, either the JetDirect is not talking to your printer or the
Win2k driver isn't working. If you haven't tried already, get the
"Install Network Printer Wizard" from hp.com

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNum=J4187AA&prodSeriesId=27908&prodTypeId=18972

It has worked well for me when installing hp printers on Win2k but it
might not work for your Epson. If you are running any firewall
software, be sure it is not blocking your printing. Also, make sure
that the JetDirect can talk to the printer by printing a test page
right from the JetDirect (usually hold down whatever little button is
on it). This test page will also tell you a key piece of info ... the
network name of the JetDirect, which you can use to identify the print
server when using the Win2k Add Printer Wizard. (Add Printer - Network
printer - Type the printer name)

Finally, although you don't have an hp printer, in some cases the
JetDirect makes an hp printer think it's a different model -- the
networked version of the same printer -- so you might possibly need
different drivers than you thought you did :)

Helium,
Great answer! The wizard failed the first time I tried it, but when
I turned on the IPX protocol, the wizard went to work and found the
JetDirect, configured it and even set up the printer as the default
printer in Windows. Your wizard suggestion was precisely what I
needed. Thank you!

Now how do I go about making your comment the answer so you can get
paid?
