schedules. Preference for East Coast.

Hello risk:

Thanks for the interesting question.

Because of your fairly precise specifications, and the fact that you
want to "rent" the turbine testing equipment, it is unlikely that
there will be a webpage/website out there that explicitly fits your
needs. But don't worry - this means that finding you what require will
involve contacting various companies and making sure that they meet
your requirements. This, in turn, means that finding the final answer
to your query may take several days or even weeks - I want to you to
get precisely what you want.

I did some thorough searching today and came up with a list of five
possible companies on the East Coast. I have sent e-mails to each of
them outlining what it is you want to do and I will keep you abreast
of my progress as I hear back from them. The five companies I have
contacted are (in no particular order):

Elliott Turbomachinery Co., Inc.
901 North Fourth Street
Jeannette, PA 15644-1473
Phone: (724) 527-2811
Fax: (724) 600-8442
Email: info@elliot-turbo.com

Hardie-Tynes Co., Inc.
P.O. Box 12166

Fax: 205-252-3254
E-mail: host@hardie-tynes.com

Test Devices, Inc.
6 Loring St.
Hudson, MA 01749
USA
Tel: 978-562-6017
Fax: 978-562-7939
Email: tdi@testdevices.com

Mechanical Solutions Inc.

Parsippany, NJ 07054-4507
Phone: 973.326.9920
FAX: 973.326.9919
E-mail: Msi@MechSol.com
URL: http://www.mechsol.com/

GE International, Inc.
3960 Mystic Valley Parkway
Medford, Massachusetts 02155
Phone: 781-396-9600
Fax: 781-393-5285
URL: http://www2.gepower.com/geps2/rs/thtml/steamturbine.html

If this first set of e-mails does not work out in a few days, I will
move on to contacting them by phone and looking for other locations.
At some point, I may need to adjust where I am looking. Other than the
East Cost, what are your secondary choices for facilities location?

Once I have found a company that claims to meet your criteria, I will
post the contact information, as well as a copy of email
communications as an Answer Clarification. I will also give periodic
updates the same way. If you have any further details or instructions
that you would like to send me, you can do so either by entering a
Request for Clarification or a Comment to this question.

Together, we'll nail this down. :-)

Thanks again for the opportunity to help you.

Hi risk:

I just got a response from Elliott Turbomachinery Co., Inc. (I had
already sent them an email before you instructed me to skip them.)

My email to them was:

***************
Hello:

Does your company "rent" the use of your steam turbine testing
facilities to
outside companies? We would be willing to work our needs around your
schedule so as not to cause you any "down time."

Our technical requirements are for testing equipment which:

1. absorbs and measures the shaft power by using either a Dynamometer
or a
Generator and Load Bank,

2. measures the steam flow, and

3. has a minimum of 125 PSIG steam pressure as well as power
absorption and measuring capability of at least 100 KW.

What can your company do for us?

Thank you.
***************

Their response was:

***************
We have the facility to conduct such testing and do consider to lease
to third
parties - the question is for how long and at what cost :

- If this is development testing then we may face a problem since we
need the
test facilities for our own production testing.

- If this is a performance test of a unit and the time on the test
stand is
expected to be for a short period then we can possibly offer. Note
however that
normally small steam turbines [ below 4000 KW ] are not subject to
performance
testing - typically only a mechanical run test is required.
Consequently this
requires a special test rig and the set up may cost several thousand
dollars -
the actual installation onto the test stand and the time/ matrials/
energy cost
to run the test would be in addition - I can easily envisage $ 20,000
cost
perhaps more.

Would you like to pursue this avenue further? If so, is there more
information you need from them? If not, let me know and I'll thank
them for the information and leave it at that.

Thanks.

Hi risk:

Just a quick update...

I sent reminder messages to the companies I emailed on Monday who have
not yet responded. As well, I sent new messages to two other GE
locations as well as a company in Texas:

Turbomachinery Industries
1305 Vermont Street
Corpus Christi, Texas 78409
Phone: 361-289-0001
Fax: 361-289-5553

I'll keep you posted.

Hi risk:

Good news. :-)

I was in touch (by phone) with someone from GE in New Jersey today and
while they told me that GE does not have the service that you are
looking for (they *can* do gas turbines), they were able to give me
the name of another company to look into:

Dresser-Rand
Paul Clark Drive
P.O. Box 560
Olean, NY 14760
Phone (716) 375-3000
Fax (716) 375-3178
e-mail info@dresser-rand.com

I sent an email to D-R and got a reply back almost immediately. I then
spoke to a person there (by phone) and he said that he thinks they
have the service that you need - but that he needs more detailed
information about your turbines, etc. He gave me the green light to
have you contact him directly. He is:

Brook Tolman
Manager - Application Engineering
Phone: (585) 596-3723
Email: M_Brook_Tolman@DRESSER-RAND.com

Please give Brook a call. I'll continue to monitor the situation for
further opportunities on this end.

Thanks.

P.S. Brook has seen the same information as listed above in the
Elliott email.

Hi risk:

I received the following email from a representative of Mechanical
Solutions Inc. today:

***************
We have available steam testing facilities through a cooperative
arrangement with a local government testing laboratory. Whether or not
we could make the facilities available for use on your equipment
depends
on answers to the following:

1. What is the equipment involved? A small steam turbine?
2. Are you an American-owned company?
3. What periods of time do you need the facility available for?
4. Are you prepared to hire our company to perform the testing for
you,
or at least provide "supervisory engineering" of the testing?
5. What other equipment do you need besides a dyno/ load bank and
steam
flow measurement device?
6. What accuracy do you require for load and flow measurement, and for
measurement of inlet and exhaust pressures, temperatures, and
associated
steam quality?
***************

Would you like to answer these questions through me - or should I just
give you this person's contact information and you can speak with him
directly?

Thanks.

Hi risk:

Well, I'm still waiting on replies from the two remaining companies I
had previously contacted (Hardie-Tynes and Turbomachinery). I have
sent reminder emails.

How are things going with the companies I put you in touch with? Any
luck?

Thanks.

Another way to track this down is by using chemindustry.com - a search
engine for the Chemical Industry. They have links to manufacturers
and distributors of industrial machinery and components like turbines.
