Vernor's Ginger Ale is considered the first soda pop made in the
United States as it was created in 1866 by James Vernor in Detroit,
Michigan. Vernor sold the drink in his drug store until around 1896
when he established a factory to manufacture the soda on a larger
scale for distribution. A neat fact about the ginger ale produced by
Vernor was that it was aged in oak casks for 4 years prior to
bottling. Vernor died in 1929 at the age of 84 and his son, James
Vernor, II ran the company until 1952 at which time his nephew took
over until the company was sold in 1966 and sales began to flatten
without the Vernor name.
In 1971, the company was sold to American Consumer Products who then
sold in 1987 to A&W Brands, which was later bought by Dr.
Pepper/Cadbury in 1993.

If there is an Alberston's in Corvalis, from what I understand, you
can purchase Diet Vernor's there. Otherwise, it is available through
Beverage's Direct at
http://www.beveragesdirect.com/browse/detail/product-462.asp for a 12
pack and http://www.beveragesdirect.com/browse/detail/product-464.asp
for a 24 pack.

Thank you for your very interesting question. I truly enjoyed learning
about the Nation's oldes soft drink. If you need any additional
clarification, please let me know.

Regards,

-THV

Not only is Vernors the oldest pop, it's one of the tastiest. Having
experience trying to order it for someone in New York, I can also
direct you to http://www.vernors.com which is run by Groceries Express
and will ship Vernors (and Faygo!). The prices appear to be slightly
higher at Groceries Express, but I believe they include shipping while
the Beverages Direct prices do not. Anyhow, just another resource to
check out.
