Question ID: 118480
I run a couple sun servers at home. I am considering purchasing the
Linksys 8 port router / firewall. I require a product that support
PPPoe and that will allow incomming FTP to work on my server. The
Dlink 704 I currently have does not seem to work properly for this
function.
I am looking for thoughts / comments on the linksys product.
Any alternate suggestions for better products with a reasonable price.

Support that is required is as follows:
pppoe
allow exact ports access i.e. 110 25 80 88 etc. perfer on a TCP or UPD
basis
allows my server to host a FTP server i.e. support the high number
port incomming connection, thus allowing my ftp server to work.
supports NAT and DHCP.

It would be neat if the product supported some type of VOIP and VPN
tunneling, but not necessary. I would be willing to pay more for
arouter that supported VPN.

Thanks

Note: I have found that lynksys's VOIP product aperhantly only works
between there product and there network and not other devices. I am
intrested in a VOIP product that could connect to another simlar
device without any fees, I.E.:

User A (me) VOIP Router
Internet (No service on the internet)
User B (Someone somewhere else) Voip Router

Thanks,
Jamie Dolan

The VOIP function is my no means a requirment. It was just something
intresting that I would use if it was available. my main issues for
getting a unit are still as follows:
pppoe
allow exact ports access i.e. 110 25 80 88 etc. perfer on a TCP or UPD
basis
allows my server to host a FTP server i.e. support the high number
port incomming connection, thus allowing my ftp server to work.
supports NAT and DHCP.

Just to let everyone know.

I decieded to get the 8 port model from www.buy.com there was a $10
rebate with free shipping. (I paid for Next day air, so it should be
here tommrow) It was the best price I found on it anywhere with the
free shipping and rebate. I think that it will work well. I thank
everyone for the helpfull comments.

Jamie

Hi jamiedolan, I have used a Linksys 4 port router for two years and
highly recommend the linksys products. This might work for you, check
out both these links:

Linksys Embeds Net2Phone VoIP

And here it is at Linksys:

Thanks for the info on the lynksys. That is simular to the model
(BEFSR81) that I have been looking at. I am wondering if you have
found any use for the VOIP in that unit. From what I can tell all you
use it for is to access there calling network, allowing you to make
calls at 3.9 cents per minute. I only pay 4.2 cents per minute for my
long distance phone service, so that does not represent much of a
savings. It would be neat, but from what I can tell, it does not let
you direct connect to someone else with a VOIP setup with one of these
units and make a free call.

I am also intrested in the VPN feature of the BEFSX41 unit, but from
what I can tell, it sounds like it is more of a client rather than a
host? I am wondering if you have 2 of these units at seprate
locations if you can even build a tunnel between the two of them,,, or
if you have to have some sort of VPN host.

Thanks for all the help!!
