The Stravinsky quote you are after comes from Chapter 3 of "The
Poetics of Music" (1939). This work is also sometimes known as "The
Poetics of Music in the Form of Six Lessons". It is a compilation of
lectures he gave at Harvard University during the 1939-1940 school
year.

The quote is:

"A real tradition is not the relic of a past irretrievably gone; it is
a living force that animates and informs the present."
