Dear irvieb,

You requested information about the moving industry, including size,
storage facilities industry in terms of companies, revenues, number of
moves per year and related information.

The AMSA is the American Moving and Storage Association. Its Web site
is located at –

http://www.promover.org/

The AMSA maintains a variety of information on the moving and storage
industries, and publishes an annual report as well as quarterly and
other reports. The following page lists all available reports –

http://www.promover.org/statistics/stats.html

Specifically, the 2001 annual report includes the information you are
seeking and much more. This report can be accessed directly at –

http://www.promover.org/statistics/2001annual.pdf

The following numbers are extracted from this report:

Total moving industry revenues, 2001 - $3.78 billion
Total industry net income, 2001 - $89.27 million
Total number of moving trucks, 2001 – 12, 625 (end of year)

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are a total of 9,100
companies in the used household & office goods moving sector. The
sector employs 121,550 employees and total 1997 sales reached $12.5
billion (I assume the number is larger than the one quoted above
because it includes commercial moves).

Additional data is available at –

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/IQRTable?_ts=57085456342

(note this is all 1997 data)

The U.S. Census Bureau provides a number of reports on the
transportation industry, many of which include data on the moving
industry as a subsector – look for sector 48421 –

An October 14, 2002 article by Patricia Poist-Reilly in the Lancaster
New Era titled “Self Storage Boom” estimates there are between 25,000
and 50,000 self-storage facilities across the United States.

An article by J. Stephen Mumma in the October 2000 issue of HR
Magazine titled “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a sound
contract” cites the number of employee relocations in 1998 as
approximately 299,000, up from 279,526 in 1990.

Here is some interesting data on individuals’ reasons for moving from
the American Housing Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau -

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/ahs/95dtchrt/tab2-11.html

I hope this response adequately addresses your request.
Thanks,
ragingacademic
