I was JUST listening to NPR this evening and heard about a fascinating
book but can't remember the author, only the subject matter. The
author is NOT who the book is about, however the subject of the book
is recently deceased.

This man was a far leftist/radical thinker. One of his major arguments
was that hospitals were a mistake in and of themselves and caused more
disease than help. He was also bilingual in many languages.

I am almost 100% sure that the title of the book starts with "The
Challenges of" and ends with name of the person. I couldn't make out
the frist name when they said it but it sounded like "Yvonne" or Evan.
I have scoured google and amazon tonight with these facts and can find
nothing. I must have this book!

Hi thescraps-ga,

Do you remember what particular NPR program were you listening to? And
could it possibly have been an older show being rerun? Thanks!

The program was on the evening of December 04. It was in the final two
hours of news programming, so it wasn't This American Life or any
program other than news. It was on sometime between 6:00-6:45pm
Central time - Chicago.

No chance of ebing a rerun.

Hi thescraps-ga,

Thanks for your question.

The book in question is “The Challenges of Ivan Illich: A Collective
Reflection,” edited by Lee Hoinacki and Carl Mitcham. Albany: State
University of New York Press, 2002. ISBN 0791454215.

The book is available at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0791454215/qid=1039113089/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-4125758-4766338?v=glance&s=books

More details about the book are available at the publisher’s site:

SUNY Press
http://www.sunypress.edu/details.asp?id=60595

If you want to listen to the piece you heard on NPR again, you can do
so by going to this URL:

All Things Considered
http://discover.npr.org/rundowns/rundown.jhtml?prgId=2&prgDate=current

A couple of sites on Illich that might be of interest:

The Ivan Illich Archive
http://www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/~ira/illich/

Ivan Illich
http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-illic.htm

Search strategy:
NPR’s site
http://www.npr.org

You mentioned that you heard the piece on NPR in the evening so I
explored several of the programs and located it (thanks also to my
fellow researcher aceresearcher-ga) on the All Things Considered
archive for 12/4/2002.

Google search:
“ivan illich”
“challenges of ivan illich”
“suny press”

I hope this answers your question. Happy reading!

The actual book of Illich about hospitals causing disease is called
Medical Nemesis. He has written many other excellent works too.
