Primarily non-impact. Specific Makes and Models:
* IBM 3800, 3900, and other such high speed IBM printers
* Siemens
* Oce
* Delphax
* Xerox 9700, 4135, 4180, other DocuPrint models

What we're ultimately looking for is a firm that cna provide a listing
of user names & locations. In years past (more than 10)I could
subscribe to firms such as Computer Intelligence, DataQuest, BISCAP,
etc. but I cannot find contact info for these firms. Maybe they sold
to other firms or changed names. Have tried many search categories,
including Computer Intelligence, Business COnsulting, Market Research,
etc.

Thanks for helping, and please contact me if you need more info.

Being a computer marketing guy, I can give you contact information AND
tell you what's happened to each firm.

Computer Intelligence has been acquired by Harte-Hanks:
Computer Intelligence Home Page
http://www.zdintelligence.com/

It is definitely the best service in terms of tracking technology
purchases, though it's been a few years since I've used CI.

Dataquest was acquired at about the same time by Gartner Group, in
Stamford, CT. My recommendation would be to go to the Gartner home
page, then put "printers" in the search box to get analysts names --
then call or e-mail them with what you're seeking. It's a big
organization:
Gartner Group Home Page
http://www4.gartner.com/1_researchanalysis/research_overview.html

The two mammoths of the research business are Gartner/Dataquest and
International Data Corp. (IDC). A similar strategy may work for them,
though I'd skip the IDG (corporate) page and go straight to:
IDC Research
http://idg.com/www/home.nsf/ResearchForm?OpenForm&region=WW

In doing market research, I often stumble across companies doing
specialized research and I know that I did for digital publishing.
Don't forget Patty Seybold, who's been involved in "desktop
publishing" since the words were first uttered. Though they're known
for their analysis, they keep copious lists too:
http://www.seyboldreports.com/

Ah, here is the company that I ran across that tracks digital print
markets:
Inter-quest
Charlottesville, VA
(434) 979-9945
http://www.inter-quest.com/

And you might also consider some of the new "digital print" media:
Digital Output
http://www.digitaloutput.net/readresource.html

The Google search strategy best used combines the trade names in
quotes:
"Computer Intelligence"
"digital printing" + "market research"

Please let me know if that meets your needs. It's an interesting
area, one already segmenting into many specialties.

Best regards,

Thanks for the info. I'll check these sites out.

1 - I remembered that CI had been purchased by Ziff Davis but could
not find anything about them. Does Ziff Davis also own Harte-Hanks?

2 - I'm familiar with Inter-Quest - have used them in the past and
have purchased sone of their materials, but they specialiaze in trends
and overall strategy more than individual statistics.

3 - I've also done some work with Gartner Group, but their pricing is
out of our range.

4 - IDC is the other firm I was trying to remember. Thanks for
jogging my memory!

5 - I also vaguely remember Patty Seybold's name - though I'm looking
for processing areas not really related to DTP.

Thanks again for bringing me up to ate, & I'll complete the rating
area after I contact the appropriate sites.

The Ziff family sold Ziff-Davis to Softbank in the early 1990s. Then
in 1999, Softbank spun off several of the businesses and Harte-Hanks
bought the market research portion:

"Analysts: Ziff-Davis could go for $3B in sale"

Here's the story on the completion of the sale:
