Bobbie7:

I'm new to Google-Answers so I'm not certain whether this post gets to
you.

Your post gets very close to where I need to be, so let me give you a
bit more clarification. I'm writing a scene about a college kid who
is heading on a 5 hour trip home from school for the Christmas holiday
on december 23, 1990. He is driving in the middle of the night and
has a lot of time to think about things.

In order for me to put the reader in his mind, I'm trying to obtain a
sense of current events and pop culture . . . what would he have been
thinking about? News events, a recently purchased album, a TV show he
watches between classes, a movie he plans on seeing when he gets home.
If he's a Patriots fan, for example, what are their prospects for the
playoffs. Clearly, he would be thinking of the Christmas holiday,
seeing his family and the exams he recently took. But what else?

1. Top news event that a college student would be interested in.
2. What kind of new music would he be listening to?
3. Is there a particular show he'd be watching (The Real World on
MTV?)
4. Is there a movie he would be looking forward to that weekend?

All of this will take only two to four sentences of the chapter, but
it's imperative that the scene have the authenticity of the time.

I'm a published author, and my most recent book is The Velocity of
Money. I have dozens of other potential questions to be researched,
if you'd be interested. Here's my book:
