I'm doing research regaring the distribution and sale of counterfeit cigarettes in China. I have a few questions regarding said topic: What are the major distribution channels for counterfeit cigarettes in China and what are the percentages of volume sold through these channels? What is the overall volume of counterfeit cigarettes sold in China? What proportion of counterfeit cigarettes in China are sold through Internet-related sales and how is the Internet involved in these transactions? What are some sample websites that sell counterfeit cigarettes in China if any exist (in Chinese is ok)? Thanks! |

By counterfit, do you mean brand-name cigarettes manufactures without license? (as opposed to ones without a tax stamp) Apparantly legitimate localy produced major Americian cigarette brands are quite cheap in China, around US$1 a pack, which is competitive with 'major brand' Chinese cigarettes. This might discourage counterfitting. In almost all of China, counterfeit products trade openly through ordinary retail channels, probably in cooperation with authorities. The "Silk Market," one of Beijing's more famous counterfeit bazars, leans right up against the U.S. Embassy. |

Since the trade is at least technical illegal, there will be no information available on the trade channels or statistics readily availabe on the Internet. Fons (non-smoker in Shanghai) |

By counterfeit, I was referring to cigarettes that are produced generically and then stamped with a brand name (like Marlboro) without permission. Also, despite the $1 price of cigarettes in China (or around 8 RMB), American cigarettes are still relatively expensive compared to certain local brands that sell for 1 or 2 RMB. Counterfeiting cigarettes is definitely a flourishing activity in China, depite recent government efforts to stop it. I realize that counterfeiting cigarettes is illegal and that information may be hard to find. That was part of the reason why I asked that question instead of doing the research myself. |
